WinCustomize pages download too slow at 56K

Hi - I wonder if anyone else has this problem. Have Desktop X that I love, but when I try to look at themes & skins on WinCustomize to download using my 56K connection, it takes forever to download one page to look at, and sometimes I can't load the pages at all. There are about 10 large graphics on each page. Are there settings I can change on my computer, or is it a sign I don't have enough memory to load the pages? Thanks for any help. E.

In your 'Edit Account' page there are options for viewing preferences....you can set them for 'speed' and also number of previews per page, etc....but unfortunately...a 'graphics' related site must itself have graphics....so they are comparatively slow loaders.

Wincustomize.com is a high-traffic site as well...

It could be worse............... you could live near me, with no access to broadband other than sat, which is too expensive, and find that the phone lines are in such bad shape that 28.8 is the best you can do.

Net Acceleration software such as NetZero HiSpeed and Earthlink's Accelerator help when accessing graphics heavy sites via dial-up. I usually connect around 41-44K, but WC loads up pretty quick for me, because of that software. Images loading the first time can be a little grainy, depending on the amount of compression you choose, but with Earthlink you can right-click and refresh a specific image to full quality.

I wasted my money a couple of weeks ago to give Earthlink a try (no free trail available).............. I was really disappointed. The accelerator requires that you have that nearly useless taskbar running, and that combined with the accelerator chewed up 60MB of memory. I could have dealt with that, but the accelerator was very hit and miss (mostly miss), and even when it claimed to be working, most times pages loaded slower than normal. The performance meter claimed to be boosting my download speed by a factor of 16 much of the time.......(yeah right)   And the right-click and refresh image at full quality never did anything.  It might work great for you, but it ain't worth a rubber biscuit to me.

My wife tried out PeoplePC on our son's computer that same weekend. They also claim to have a net booster........... she was no more impressed with that than I was with Earthlink. (But at least they have a free trail)

For a man who uses the internet a lot Koasati,28.8 must be pure hell. Hard to believe no one in your area has set up a wireless connection yet.The one I had in Bowie TX was fantastic and reasonable(40 a month).(town of 5000 people)My speed there was over 2 mbits per second.

28.8K sucks....I know from when i was living in Henniker and on a good day got around 31K, but more often than not it was around 24K.

Yeah the earthlink taskbar is pretty useless, I keep it minimized to the systemtray. It, with the accelerator use around 40MB here and speed claims are only 6X here, with actual around 90K-100K after acceleration. There is DSL available here, but it'll cost me $70 a month, local private phone company operates things around here. $70 a month for 256K is ridiculous

Earthlink Accelerators and the like do very poorly loading graphic files, and when downloading anything with graphics in a .zip, they are useless. I thas to do with the compression and decompression algoritms used to speed the file transfers.

True, but was talking about how fast the WC pages loaded

Right here with you! I HATE Dial-Up too, and this website does take a little while to load with dial-up. but im stuck with it for a while so, if I just wanted you to know that there are more of us out there!

I tried Earthlink & PeoplePC. They both sucked. I really like SurfGlobal with accelarator.

The GreenApple theme is less graphics- intensive (may load faster.). Mozilla acually is faster than IE, and PeoplePC internet itself is a real deal ($ wise), but all accelerators reduce image quality. Maybe WinC should make a monochrome skin (you know, in Paint, then save as monochrome) that is plain white with black borders. Boring, I know, but monochrome is so much faster!!!! Also, I've tried SBC DSL and it was so- so web page speeds. Downloads of the Battlefield Vietnam WW2 mod were fast though. I just decided that the normal $11 dial- up PeoplePC is me (for price and feature load).
