What's the point? Why have the site at all?

What's the point? Why have the site at all?

I don't often bring this up but I sometimes wonder why we even have this site. I get considerable hate mail every single day because of this site.

Someone didn't get a wallpaper accepted. No idea what the wallpaper was since I didn't moderate it but I get called a Nazi or worse.

Some other guy's network connection isn't working and can't access their skin for some reason so naturally we deleted it because we're "assholes".

And don't even get me started about the people who run into the 50 megabyte limits. You can be assured that for every guy who posts something here, I get 2 emails about it explaining why I am personally a putrid human being.

And I've had days where I get called a "fucking Nazi" and a "blood sucking Jew" (I'm not even Jewish) for things ranging from not "doing something" about the ratings on the site or some comment on some skin that I didn't remove.

And on top of that, this site costs a fortune to run.  The ONLY reason this site is remotely possible to keep up at this point is because of the generous volunteers who run this site day to day.  The admins and moderators who, I might add, often get treated poorly and without any kind of gratitude.  The other variable are the people who SUBSCRIBE to the site.  I.e. pay the $20 for 2 years.

One of the few pleasures I get out of the site lately has been to write about things that interest me.  I realize that some people don't like "blogs".  Or me ranting about niche developer stuff.  What does a PC user care if some obscure Mac developer is getting screwed over by Apple? Why should I keep "whining" about it? It doesn't affect Stardock one iota. If anything, it helps Stardock by taking out a potential competitor.

But I can't even do that without people bitching about THAT. Sure, those people don't know about all the crap that I and others have to put up with on a daily basis because of the site.

But then again, neither does the egomaniac skinner who sends me the nastygram telling me how I'm a parasite on the backs of skinners for working to make customization software.  And the "artist" who sends me a 10 page email insisting that other artists like him should be getting a "royalty" off of every WinCustomize subscription because it is really THEY who matter.  THEY, their ART is what makes this site run and for me to even suggest that developers, moderators, or even users fit in is a demonstration of my "arrogance" and "ignorance" of the circle of life that is the skinning community. That guy doesn't know about the crap we go through either.  Not that he'd be interested.

Right now, what's really helping keep thigns going besides the wonderful people who moderate this site and the users gracious enough to purchase WC subscriptions is the IT team working full time to create the next generation WinCustomize.  Their hard work and tireless devotion to trying to make something really special helps keep the excitement going.

But to those who feel the need to email me telling me that writing non-news items is a "waste of their time" or "yet another example of your petty egoism" or are just "lame rantings", I say to you: Fuck you. Of those who have emailed me, who have accounts, NOT ONE of them has a WC subscription.

Most people dont' seem to have a problem with editorials. And those who don't like them who have posted on the message boards have been at least constructive about it. I have a LOT more respect for the guy who publicly writes their views than the coward who just sends hate mail from their anonymous Hotmail or Yahoo or whatever email account spewing venom at me.

But I'm not having fun right now with this site.  I look at the bills (hundreds of thousands of dollars a year).  I look at my inbox.  And I ask "Why? What's the point?"

Sorry if I sound a little depressed. I think everyone has those days once in awhile.  And I'm having one today.

Probably about the same, percentage wise, as if Microsoft took down their website. Without winCustomize, stardock could devote more assets into advertising to the general public, and getting product placments in larger stores.

And without WC, a lot of motivation to make quality skins would be lost. Who would want to make skins to show only at Deviant? I believe that Stardock, Object Desktop and Windowblinds would not be nearly as popular without Wincustomize. The showing of a Pixtudio or Adni18 skin at Deviant makes me feel sad.

Brad - Screw 'em. If it were me I would find fun and entertaining ways to delete those messages. Maybe a Garbage disposal sound. Maybe a cool WFX transition, like a ripping effect into the distance. About 5 years ago there was a small program you could load a gun and fire hole's into your desktop, that was always hilarious.

Bottom line though is that the disenfranchised will always be the most vocal and abusive. They have plenty of freetime and no manners. I think you need to put them in a Free-Speech Zone! The majority of people really like the way you run things here, but we are not going to email you that everyday. A lot of nice comments here, soak them up.

Maybe you should consider loading all the Customer email addresses as a filter on your mail server. Would cut down on the spam.

WC is solely a depository for skinners to upload and users to download. I'd be willing to wager that any profit, if there is any, of running WC is vastly offset by the headaches caused by running and hosting the site. For any one skinner or group of skinners to think (s)he/they are providing free advertisement for Stardock by uploading their skins to WC is ridiculous. Also, about that 1-900 number somebody mentioned before, I'd be tempted to call it.

There are dozens of alternate skinning sites currently...and were WC to disappear then it's argued others may come along to help fill the void....supply and demand does that.....so a major factor in Stardock 'wanting' WC to be here is the positive public/community spirit which is a two-way street.

What Stardock is doing with WC is to provide a huge, stable outlet for people's works at minimal cost to the user.

What's intended with WC2K5 [the next generation] is the possibility of commercial benefits for skinners who have their work here....a gradual 'business model' being applied to the site as a whole.

Then the opportunity may arise where you CAN 'eat downloads for lunch'....

Every so often a 'brave soul' [not 'sole'] poses the comment .....usually along the lines of....'Stardock profits through the skinners' works'.  Now, best example I can give is....I do not have a website of my own....my works are [mostly] here....over 100,000 dl's....cost me my membership fee.....I didn't ever see a bill from a Webhost screaming about bandwidth usage, yet my 'product'  is being seen by over 2 million people a month.......Stardock paid that FOR me.

Everyone see how this works now?...

mmmm, Iben, you know damn well the site has worked in the red since it opened the first day...

What the bottom line here is, you feel that you are owed something.

The question is what might that be and exactly how are you owed it?

And what does it have to do with Brad, who is a bit tired of listening to people who take out their frustrations on him?

No I am owed nothing.

I am pointing out that if some skinner out there thinks that this work has a payoff, he is probably mistaken unless he is one of a very few.

Pay for a domain, host, create of pay someone to create your site and sell things as you want...

It is simple really after all, no one owes anyone a damn thing beyond that which is held within the agreement enacted upon purchase.

Come time for WC.4 there is an option to sell premium work on an opt in basis if I remember correctly.

If what you are getting at is that you feel Brad, Stardock or WinCustomize owe you something for your storing and your ability to have your library held upon a site with some of the best Skinners on the net then you are sadly mistaken.

No one owes you or anyone else a damn thing...

They are your (respective skinners) marbles and if you don't want to play, pick and bag them up and go play some where else. It would be sad to see it come to that, but that is always the bottom line when you remove all the niceties from the equation. If you see this site as an offering to be a part of something, fantastic, if you see it as your personal storage on the net and feel you should be paid something for it, then so sad to bad don't go away mad if you can, but, go away...

Do you skin?

I play at it, is that some kind of litmus test?

I do graphics, draw, paint and otherwise have some talent in the artistic arena...

good enough for you?

The only reason I haven't got a library, and have not finished a skin, is not for lacking talent...

It's a personal thing which holds me back from it for now... When the time comes, there will be free things and things I feel are worth money and also I hope professional clients. But I will be damned if I would hold this site or any other site responsible in making or breaking my marketability...

I will disapprove this comment.
Before I came to WC a little over a year ago, my work was limited to verbal advertising and client's references (on my local area) After exposing my work here at WC I've gotten contracts from just about anywhere in the world and I don’t even have a paid website, so I am indeed grateful that WC exists.
Now, not all skinners skin for money. Most do it as a hobby, but it's nice to know that websites such as WC give enough exposure to your work just in case you decide to do some commercial work.
