Skinners: What was your catalyst to start skinning? (Another mushy thread)

I got sick of seeing all the Pseudo-OS skins on WinCustomize. *cough* Not that things are so different now...

And with the massive disappointment that was Quake 3, I no longer spent the bulk of my day mapping and texturing for Q2.

stumbling across WinCustomize about this time last year: within a fortnight I had bought all the Stardock goodies and was nervously waiting for my first skin to be moderated - instant addiction

For me it all started while I was running a tech site. WB 1.3 was released and proved to be stable so in the course of doing a review I built a hideous Skin ( OWTWin) which hopefully no one still has. From that point most of my skins were build to try odd things, for example Slim_T was first built to test the pre 1.0 versions of skinstudio and to see how slim a titlebar wb could handle. Since then I have become so used to the different version of Slim_T that I just update it and build things to go with it..........

/me isn't a skinner

I think my future catalyst would be a decent program and a tutor to teach me how to use it

until then....well hell you know....*sigh

The day I discovered David K's alienskin theme it was all over. Now that markus has hit the scene I am thinking it's all over again.

I got started when I first found Winamp in 96/97. I found out a friend of a friend made his own skins for it, which I had no idea you could do, so I ended up looking into it and made my own ones. I moved over to WB in 99 or so after seeing Treetog's original Copperdeck suite.

Oh God... I wonder if it'd be possible to find my old winamp skins from the mid 90s...

Seriously though...the GUIOlympics got me inspired to try skinning

My biggest inspiration was the sheer ugliness of Win98, and discovering "skinz.org" 2 months after I started using a computer.

And I always thought we were in it for the money, , sorry, I spelled it wrong, happiness ?

I got into skinning because of a wall of nuvem. I ask where the wall came from and I was told, from wincustomize, they have great walls there.
I looked arround and withing a couple of days I was addicted to objectbar.
Thats what got me into skinning. The fun of making skins and being able to create something that you can share kept me going for a while.

Then I started to create some icons. I got contacted by someone if I could create some stuff for him and because I was quite busy I said "I will do it for 20$" (thinking he probably wouldn't bother any more and leave me alone )

He accepted that and that was my first experience with commercial skinning.

Never knew money could be so.... inspiring?

Will be comming some free skins soon tought, got some of them laying arround here. Will be re-opening styl-x with a blast!

Oh yeah, almost forgot about the green start button. Had to go!

/me was inspired by all the great skinners and their skins.

Thats why I download as many as I can.

Winamp set it off. The idea of the users ability to change the way it looked got me hooked (wow that rimed). I looked deeper into it and found Stardocks apps. Just awesome. Now I can change it all and make some after my own taste.

Messing with weird proggies....found Litestep...a horrid looking thing with little lightglobes as shortcut icons.....got hooked....somewhere around b21 release '97 or '98....thereabouts [I still have the old shell somewhere]...
