Creating Your Own Desktop Theme (+1 question)

I've been reading up as much as possible on DX, but since the free version doesn't allow it, I have no idea what it takes.
I just wanted to know how difficult it is, technically speaking, to use the program to create your own desktop themes and impliment them?
Do you have to know any in-depth coding? I'm proficient at DHTML4 and working with Photoshop, but that's about it, so I'm curious if it would be worth my purchasing or not.
My other question is just curiosity: how many people are using/how common is it becoming for people to use "active" desktops like this?
Since I'm "new to the game", I've no idea, but while there is a great amount here, it's not enough to make me think this has really "caught on" yet with most people (or many just don't know about it/aren't interested).
