The 2004 GUI Olympics

I agree. There is so much reat content there. I wonder when more of it will be uploaded here. The main things I see bad about it is: the stress the admins and moderators went though, and Wincustomize's library loses some great uploads to the GUI Olympics untill a much later date.

By all means,do it again!I look forward to participating in one.The skins I saw when I got back where extraordinary!

If you look, the skins that were on the GUIO are now in WC's libraries.

Very nice. I didn't enter this year. I won a bronze in the last one.

The skins & icons at the GUIO, in my opinion are ART, I try skinning, but compared to the artwork I viewed on the website, my skins look like pencil drawings.

after seeing who won the gui olympics, and the top 2 making the top 3 winners, i have to say i am very very dissapointed. there was all this hype about the GUI Olympics, and the winners was quality i had seen back in modding sites in the last 90's. i thought it would be better than that. it seems that most modders are 18 and under, which is sad. no formal training or experience with design techniques, and i guess that is why we get sub-standard skins and themes. i believe the only modding community that has contributed really good work worthy of praise is deviantart and theme-xp.org, i have yet to find any work submitted to this site, minues a few objectdock and wallpaper excepetions, that merit any praise. the gui olympics results were definately a letdown.

i would not use those result to promote this site, if i were new to the site, and say the 3 top winning skins, i would not come back to the site, they are very gaudy and unprofessional.

How about you take your 2 cents and try to buy a clue with it, or just shove it. Formal training tends to take the art out of art, any idiot can create something given a guide. When I was 16 I made quite a bit of money doing commissioned artwork, needless to say I had no formal training. At one point I was employeed working for a online software developement company, and I was amazed at how young and talented some of the other employees were.

Do not come around some forums, and give your 2 cents if it may discourage or belittle someone. Especially younger people, I remember when I constantly questioned if I should stick with graphic art because so many older more trained people were trying to break into the same field, the last thing they need is someone putting their work down. Talent that is developed at ones on pace and by ones own motivation is always better than a false-sense of skill which is to you. Talent and creativity cannot be taught, some people have it, some don't. Odds are if you're going to a class to find it, you don't have it.

Training tends to be a waste of money, as any artist who is developed enough to appreciate the training doesn't need it. In that they may sit in 4 hour classes every other day for 14 weeks, and walk away having only picked up one tip or trick they'll actually make application of.

Personally I think the winning skins are a bit overly-professional. They tend to show a style thats been adapted to fit the masses, which is a very professional notion.

Your opinion is moot to begin with, for quite a few reasons that I shall refrain myself from elaborating upon. I love how you mention how work on DeviantArt is worth praise, it seems to me 70% of the work on there is some juvenille, psuedo-gothic attempt to be overly artistic, and of course dark, because you have to be dark to be cool on DeviantArt. 20% of the content are some photo of some naked woman in the same trite positions every photographer has taken pictures in. And 10% of the work is actually decent. I use to spend a good 2 hours a day browsing through the DeviantArt galleries thinking to myself, "well only 4 more page... well I guess I'll go til I find something I like." Now I pretty much go just to check out the daily features which are always nice.

BTW the only skill I see that you possess in your ability to assess art is the ability to hit the PrtScn key and Ctrl+V

eh... as far as formal training goes...

If your doing it or have done so, school is a good thing for you if it works out.

But there are just as many un-schooled artists out there ecking out a living.

Reality check....the average age of GUI skinners would be well over '18'......very likely the 'wrong' side of 30.

Many have 'formal training'....mine was 30 years ago....[though it's still continuing through sites such as this].

The 'winning' skins are not just available on Wincustomize.com......look a little more closely at Deviantart, for example....you'll find them there, too.  Perhaps that will deter people from going to Devart as well?.....nope.....

Sure glad I'am not a skinner, I'd have to be pissed (personally). As it is, I'am just pissed at that type of comment. There are a lot of great skins on the 2004 GUIO. I think you need to see an optometrist. Glasses are in need.
