Noob having trouble running DesktopX

Hi folks. New to the site and to customizing. I bought WindowBlinds yesterday and I want to get DX next. But I d/l'd the shareware version first to make sure it worked in Windows 98. Whenever I try to run it, I just get the following error messages:

I don't want to buy the full version unless I know it'll work on my machine. Thanks in advance!

To get the most from customizing your interface, I highly recommend winXP. With that said, I would update DirectX, and try to find the visual basic software. There is visual basic 3 to 6. 6 being the latest. A lot of the dll files in third party programs need the additional visual basic runtimes. Even if you like Win98 as I did, the customizing capabilities and API effects will blow your mind with WinXP. Effects such as can only be provided with CursorXP and WinXP. Good Luck.

I can guarantee you that you won't fully appreciate what these programs can do unless you have WindowsXP. That is if your Processor speed will allow you to run WinXP. Memory is also important with DesktopX. Windows98 does not handle memory to well. It is still basically a DOS shell.

I know. I've spent tons of time at work (shhh) looking longingly at the Screenshots. I plan to upgrade to XP. My machine is just a PIII @ 700Mhz with 256MB of memory and a GeForce2 card. Hey don't laugh. *sweeps some dust off the case*

Oops. Forgot to ask if you guys think it can handle XP, or needs an upgrade first. Can't afford a whole new PC right now.

I ran XP on a PII 450Mhz, with 384 MB of RAM.

Yeah, it should be able to handle it. I had a PIII 750 Mhtz with 384MB of Ram, until I just upgraded myself. Now, I'm at 3 Ghtz and 1GB Ram. My 750 WinXP system ran everything much better than Win98. "Much better" doesn't even begin to explain how much better. You can lose the Object Bar with WinXP. Windowblinds won't need it at all. Windowblinds will skin everything on its own with WinXP. The graphics drawing is worlds better too. Memory usage is handled much better too. I think XP requires 64MB of Ram and 128MB preferable. So, you should be alright in that category. A Galaxy Awaits.(Hey where did I hear that?)

...er, why do people seem to think that objectbar is merely for emulating the XP taskbar and startmenu on non XP systems?

I run XP and use objectbar daily, its a fantastic, customizable program launcher that I wouldn't be without. I use standard XP taskbar and startmenu in conjunction with a few categorized ob bars containing my favourite programs, which puts them a couple of mouse clicks away at all times

I would hate to do without OB.  I feel absolutely lost without it.  I have used it as long as I have WB.  Having XP or not has nothing to do with it's purpose.  I happily run it and DX and WB and I use XP.

<- horrified at the thought of losing my beloved OB!
