The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

When at home, I'm using my girlfriend's broken-down, seven year old comp over a crappy dialup connection to connect to the internet (over AOL! insert banned vomit face here). My own computer is working ok now, except for the modem which is nonfunctional for some reason.

I just moved out of the dorms and into a new apartment. I'm sleeping on an air mattress and I have no furniture whatsoever. My comp is sitting on the floor, next to a big pile of mostly clean laundry. But beds will be delivered today (at last!) and maybe I'll even have a computer desk before too long. (Oh, the luxury!) Assembly required on all this, of course :p

And vincible will bind metal to wood, wood to metal, and chant arcane spells in a tongue never heard today (at least not in polite company), and through sheer force of will he will bring order from chaos. And soon, the sacred Artifact of Dell shall rise from the stench below to sit, pristine, above the disorder. Only then, when all is ready, will vincible end his long exile from the Metaverse, to strike with renewed fury at the foes of the Fellowship.

Actually Gerakken would be another one who has really contributed much to our empire. But not sure whether he wants to be considered an honorary member.

I'll take it. It may nab me some free drinks at the Pony. :)
Gerakken may give his allegiance to G.R.O.S.S., but the Metaverse is truly his home, not any one empire.

Wow, thanks, Obi Wan. That is quite a compliment!
Probably should put on there that we are currently at war with G.R.O.S.S.

That always seemed to be the case. GROSS is very aggressive about its space and raids everyone in it. The best you can do with my pirate associates is hope they misunderstand parley as barley and hope they think you are offering them a bribe. LOL But I am proud to be one of them.

We are eagerly awaiting your return, vincible! Fare thee well in thy efforts!

Cotal, good luck with ANZAC. We will miss you (and your scores) at FOTR. You are a very good player and help make the Gal Civ community work. Congrats on being a senator at ANZAC too. Also thanks for the tips on the terror stars as an end game ploy. I built a couple last night for the first time. They have great graphics and are quite effective. Not sure how I can remain "good" after using them but what the heck? LOL.

OK, we FOTR folks need to post some games. Congrats to everyone who has posted a completed game in the metaverse over the last week or two. I will get off my tiny galaxy kick some day but with all my crash-to-desktop events (six or seven yesterday), it is hard to get excited about longer games. For now, putting a score on the metaverse before turning on the TV at night to watch a movie or US NFL football is kind of nice rather than the one week monster game. Again, congratulations to you players who win at big maps and difficult AI. :)

Thanks, Rick!

Sorry to hear you're still having those CTD issues. :(

Yes, we've got some really active players! I think things will pick up with the rest of us now that school's coming back and vacations are ending.

Really busy day at work...probably will be gone the rest of the day. (:(

Happy gaming!

Gerakken, you may not have remembered but you were a great encouragement to us when we were still finding our way around as the White Council. Truely, the Fellowship extends to you our thanks. :)

Wow, more drama on the Meta. But the GCCG is one sensitive topic that I better steer clear of. :notsure:

Have you all seen the chat statistics? V interesting. :)
Yes, Ray - everyone has been talking about the way you talk about the GCCG ;p LOL

I'm not surprised by the latest Metaverse scandal--it's been clear for a long long time that Stardock wants us to play the game in the way that they think is most fun, rather than the way we think is most fun.

Ah Wombat, one of my fav chatting partners, according to the chat stats. :D

Must be that period of time where we were discussing the themes vs localities war.

Sorry for using this thread for something that has nothing to do with the subject, but I'm posting this in the threads where the most people will see it.

I made a big mistake in the new version of the anomaly pack :VOMIT:. I forgot to put to delete the old version of it in the readme, so if you've downloaded the new version with pictures, please do so.

vincible - unfortunately, that's my worry too. Witness the Diablo situation, when everytime a player devised a brilliant new tactic, the devs would nerf the skills down to 'level the playing field'. The more 'rules' you put around a community, the more you stifle fun and fresh development.

Ray - really? Must check those stats in more detail! If you've missed some of the latest posts, we have you figured as an Agent of the Matrix - the chat logs prove it! The resistance is circulating your poster:

Well, I guess there are folks who enjoy smelling the roses, ringing all the bells, blowing all the whistles before they churn out Excaliburs for the final kill. :D

No worries, Nand1. We will make that public announcement in the Halls.

BTW, the VOMIT Smiley is a monopoly of the ANZACs and their circulation is strictly controlled.

Translation - Cari doesn't like us to use it. :)

You guys know what this reminds me of? MIB!

The Men in Black empire. Protectors of friendly aliens. Exterminators of hostile ones. :HOT:

Lets all gang up against GROSS...
End of quote

JUST a moment!

The Jedi aren't planning on going to war with GROSS anytime soon. Although our empires are probably best described as "neutral" to each other, we've built up a good rapport with a few of the individuals, particularly Kit, Gerakken and the Southern Seas bunch. On days when Altarians aren't mentioned, even EBZ is friendly.

We appreciate our good relations with FOTR and many of the ANZACs. Y'all have some good people over there. But we're NOT getting dragged into a three-way alliance that involves a declaration of war against GROSS. Settling personal issues in the ring or with prose is one thing. War is something else again.

Any declaration would have to go through a vote of the Jedi Council or simply be decided by Yoda - take it up with him before you speak for us.

Side note: In my last game, I renamed all of the default empires but kept the default alignments. Drengin became GROSS, Altarians were FOTR, the Torians became MWC, the Yor became Canadians and the Arceans became the Euros. Here's how we know it was fiction: Fellowship of the Ring was a pipsqueak empire that went down early to GROSS, GROSS was taken out third, and the Euros and Canadians lasted nearly until the end of the game!

Although GROSS did have a long, bloody battle with the MWC. THAT made sense.

Maybe next time, I'll replace the Euros with ANZAC.

Obi-Wan, you are getting too serious here. :)

We have good rapport with many GROSSers. Notice two out of three of the Fellowship's honorary members are from GROSS.

All this talk about war and such are just bantering and part of the friendly competition. Does it mean that just because the Fellowship and GROSS are vying for the top spot that we don't talk to each other?

Just last night (for me), Wombat, EBZ, Blue, Cotal, Matthew Downie and myself were enjoying ourselves at a galactic ball at the chat room. :)
~SDC~

Edit- And I will never presume to speak for the Jedis.
