The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Thanks, I'll add it in a minute!

Also, thanks for the compliment! No problem about the hosting, I'm actually getting used to the banner on top! LOL I enjoy working on the website, and it gives me a good opportunity to keep up with the goings on around here!

Okay, it's on the Strategy page http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv/strategy.htm

I might make a FAQ page later on and move it there. It doesn't really qualify as a "strategy", does it? :)

Call me insane, but I just added a FAQ page to the Fellowship site. If anybody can think of something suitable to add to it, post it here and I'll add it.

Regarding mods. I downloaded the mod to decrease the volume of the Drengin music. I created a new folder and put the "stock file" in there. Then I put the new downloaded file in the regular "stock folder" and it works fine.

I sure wish there was a mod to increase planet events. Going good on a tiny map makes it hard to go pure and get trade centers until later in the game. Then finally the non planet event morale decisions can push one over 90. I like to be rich and get those ones that cost cash. They rapidly move toward the "good-meter" and don't wreck morale or research.

Hello everyone. Just joined up with the fellowship, and Ray suggested I stop by and say Hi.

Hi. ;)

LOL Ok, now I'm laughing. It's too late here for any rational thought and I just finished up my second maso game just a little while ago, so my brain is a little bruised.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone here on the forums. They have turned me from the loser (on simple) I was into the maso player I am today.
Thanks!

I was going to say something else, but I forgot. Off to bed...

Theoden, your Fellowship news is always a fun read. LOL You should advertise it on the main forum under its own thread.

Think you should write an article on the new Evil Empire, Theoden. I think they look very promising. bakka's joined as well.

Congrats on FOTR being first in the empire.

I have completed my "tiny" experiment on playing a game on beginner, normal, challenging, tough, & painful. I played pure good against all pure evil AI. I tried to change very little other than what was necessary like building up a military deterence when I could no longer bankrupt the AI. On each, I got all the trade goods/wonders (on the last even got slaves & life force playing good by trading with Drengins).

Similar to the experience Cotal found while playing large, my scores on the different difficulty levels of Tiny didn't change much. The were roughly around 12k. My score on painful went down because I was behind all game to the Drengin in population, technology, and everything but maintained parity in military with corvettes & AMM. It was a see-saw battle that I could not keep up. When the Drengins wiped out everyone else including minors, the $$$ dried up. Penniless, I gave up research, made the decision for Earth to put Excaliburs in the field and build AMM in lesser planets. After my military rating was higher (via AMM & corvettes), and although greatly outgunned my 3 Excaliburs & I declared War on the Dregs and destroyed dozens of dreadnoughts, rangers, AMM, & corvettes. Aren't Excaliburs great? On the same turn before they could retaliate, I asked for peace. I kept doing this over & over until I destroyed their navy piecemeal with my few Excaliburs. During the process, I took all of their money and tech. Finally with my Excaliburs outside their main planets (they still had higher population), I extorted for $$$ but they were stingy. I then had to declare war every time they got some spare cash so I could destroy rangers & dreadnoughts and get cash for peace. After getting all the tech, I put 343% culture starbases in their home sector. The silly Dreg went to war again when I refused to remove them so my Excaliburs went back to work. Well, you get the picture. It was . . . uh . . . almost painful. :D

In addition the planets were way too big to invade. Ivading sectors with > 100 billion when they have all the planet defense techs is hard. On the tough game, it took me over 30 combat transports with 30 straight nasty attacks at 1000bc each (the meteors) to "liberate" the smoking hulk of a decimated planet. And that was their (Arceans) smaller planet in the tough game so I gave up invading the star systems with > 100 billion plus all the tech.

The moral of the story is just more proof that increasing difficulty will make the game more challening, much longer and you might lose but it won't bump up metaverse scores very much for all the extra difficulty and time. So for a real challenge, Gal Civ offers it. But, if you want a quick fun game don't be concerned about playing at a lower level. Just have fun. :)

Finally, the computer had Overlord & Excalibur tech but didn't build them. I would have been toast. Wonder why he stuck to dreads & rangers? Again my hat is off to you who win at crippling & maso.

ricbayer,

This seems extreme. If you "fleet" 10 Combat Transports together, that's 50 BILLION troops that land at the same time and can all make use of the same combat tactic. Throw in the fact that the attacker ALWAYS seems to have an advantage in GalCiv, assuming you're even CLOSE to your opponent in tech, and well...I'm working on a Painful now, have played several, and I've never had anybody survive a wave like that.

Of course, it takes forever to get enough of these "D-Day" fleets put together and moved to the front lines to take on a major empire, but you can't have everything.

Obi

Thanks for the tip. I was sending in the battle transports as they arrived. The Arceans had this extremely high defense factor, which I presume was all the planetary defense techs. I finally destroyed their navy and moved in the culture bomb starbases for a flip.

ric,

No problem. Actually, I felt guilty about giving advice to somebody with 33 game submissions to my 8. It takes me awhile to finish games, and what with work and real life intervening I just don't seem to have the time lately.

Now I REALLY feel guilty - I noticed that your first submission is only 2 days before mine! - I need to step up the pace a bit for the honor of the Jedi order!

Seriously, I notice that the AI hardly ever fleets transports together. This is DUMB. As with any other 4X game, the easiest way to win a land battle is by having more troops than the other guy. I'll usually have 2-3 small fleets (3 ships or so apiece) of warships in a "triangle" ahead of and flanking a large fleet of transports. Let the warships clear a path to the planet and take out anybody in orbit, then take the planet with the fleet of transports.

The downside is this takes awhile, particularly on a big map where every AI has 10 systems...

Nice posts ricbayer and Obi Wan.

I've given up on troop invasion against highly teched AI systems (the worst I ever had was a Torian 3 planet system with near full populations on every planet and all the bells and whistles (troops and planetary defencewise). . . shez).

For some reason my troops where all DOA in the first couple strikes? Mabye this is a reflection of planetary defences? or a bug or whatever? Ikonoknow.

Now I just play along all 'buddie buddie' with the AIs until the endgame and take those huge systems out with my 'evil bon bons'.

Interestingly the maintanence on lots of Combat Transports is huge whereas constuctors cost nothing. Mindful of this an alternative means to victory could be using an 'Alpha' stike paying 5000 bc a pop for a dozen Terror Stars all constructed at once in a single turn (only 9 or 11 needed I think to make a Terror Star?).

This is especialy easy and hasel free considering your allowed to go into huge debt with their purchase (a most questionable facet of gameplay) . . . Not that I'd ever try anything so cruel offcourse, its all just theory . . . hehe.

Wow! Playing as ultra good against all evil AIs gives you a huge score bonus! plus 15 to 20% I'd estimate over the default setting. :SURPRISED:

I'm not sure whether Frogboy did some tweaking to the alignment bonus in Xpack Beta 3 because it seems to me like the alignment bonus is reduced.

I've just played a pure evil game with pure evil AI before I went neutral and you see that my score is in fact v slightly higher than games where I played pure good with pure evil AI.
Oh! Sorry Ray I should have mentioned I'm still playing 1.05 . . .

I should also mention that the AI's where set to 'Chaotic' evil for those games. In this latest game I'm playing at the moment I've tried setting all the AIs to 'Pure' evil. This seems much more difficult compared to playing against chaotics where I can get an alliance even if I'm saintly. Against 'Pure' evil they just don't seem to want to go for it . . . :notsure:

An interesting coincidence ...

My Metaverse score just went over 50k at the same time I first broke into the top 50 :D

Kinda proud of that since I spend so much time on other pursuits (although that experimental game was a flop ;p )

Ray, I may be misunderstanding what you just wrote, but it sounds like you played evil in that game then went neutral at the end. If that's the case, then of course the score didn't change much, you must play against the AI alignment for the whole game to get a major difference in score. Best possible scenario is to have a bunch of alignment questions pop up during colonization and make all good choices against all pure evil AIs.

I was pure evil most of the game, MP. I only went to neutral at the end of the game when I did my colony ship culture bombing. I tried the other way of being pure good all the way but it didn't seem to produce great results in Beta 3. I remembered it had greater impact in 1.05.

Congrats for breaking into Top50!

Well I've really enjoyed my stay here in the hallowed halls of the legendary Fellowship of the Ring Empire, but alas the time has come for me to return from whence I came.

Your empire is full of dedication and vitality and although I will dearly miss that lovely golden ring and the closeness that only such an allegence can bring I must be true to myself and support my old empire that I feel needs me now more that ever. I have been impressed with thier continual resiliance for some time now and can see that the Fellowships course will continue on quite happily as it always has . . .

Thanks to you all for improving my game and filling in the dull moments of the day with you delightful posts . . . good luck to you all! I will never foget that I was once a member of the Fellowship and will reflect upon that fact with great pride and happiness.

I hope you don't mind me leaving, its the right thing to do (:(

I don't mind at all, Cotal. I have certainly enjoyed your company over the past days/weeks. Do continue to drop by the Halls and interact with us. :)

I'm sure the ANZACs will really appreciate you returning to help them out.
