So I finally decided to get rid of my Nvidia Gforce2 card and install my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card. So I installed it carefully (while touching metal so there was no static discharge) and then I secured it.

I then booted up the PC and the monitor flickered on but the text on screen was messed up. Seems the card was only displaying every other line and some text was garbled.

So I took out the card carefully and inspected every part of the card under close observation. There seems to be NO cracks or broken parts on the card.

So what is wrong with it? Please keep in mind my board only runs at AGP 4x and it is a old board. BIOS date is in the year 2000. My Nvidia card runs fine so I suspect it is the card that is screwing up. But it was pulled from a working system so I am confused.

I will go test it on a friends system to see what happens. Any other advice?

I do have the latest VIA drivers installed. But I still do not know why it will not work on power up. I bet it's my monitor. Gonna go test it on another machine here shortly.

whats the refresh rate on that monitor?

also you might want to disable the AGP shared memory setting in bios.

I've been running my Nvidia card at 85 hz refresh rate with no problems. Not sure what the actual refresh of the monitor really is. I don't have the option to disable shared anything in BIOS.

My husband had the same problem when he installed his ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card. He had to do something with the bios (?) and then there was a switch inside that he had to move to the other setting. I know that's not any help but I thought it may help if you knew it wasn't unusual and probably is not the card.

I installed the same ATI card a few months ago, and I had to boot up in safe mode and uninstall the old drivers and install the new drivers from there before installing the new card. As I recall I also had to install latest BIOS and/or chipset drivers as well.

Nope... still the same result as always. Turn on the power and it only shows every other line on the screen and then it all blinks pretty colors with zeros. I'll find out tommorrow if it works.

Kona - I couldn't find the specs for the AGP voltage on your Mobo....my guess is 3.0 and I think (hopefully someone will know) that ATI card is 1.5.

hummmm....if you're getting 'numbers' on your screen...that's the card. There's no power plug on the card, is there?

Well, then chances are good there isn't one on his.... Usually when you get that gibberish on your screen, a couple of cold starts fixes it. There is one thing that it might be: Some older VIA chipsets do not have 4x AGP support (even though they claim to have it). Because of this, ATI has disabled 4x AGP support in some drivers when it detects any older VIA chipset, whether that chipset supports 4x AGP or not. Short of that, my guess is that his card is trashed....we won't know until he tries it in another machine.

If the card wasn't working you'd get eight beeps on start up. It's most likely a BIOS issue, with incompatible monitor coming a close second.

The fact he's not getting that is why I think it may (may) be that ATI driver 4x thing. You're right about that 13" monitor though...the pixel scan rate must be pretty dismal on that baby...

Nope. I have a very good feeling this is a motherboard issue.
