Yet one of my fave cars....one I'd like to own is an A-Class Merc....about as little as they get....just happens to be a good design [once they got over the Moose-test issue]...

Being a lil ole country gal I have to drive quite a ways to get anywhere...I have a jeep...hubby drives a mini van *uck ack I won't drive it haha...anyway...hmmm geeze I need more coffee...oh yeah...last week I paid $2.07 and did my once a week trip to town to pay bills and get groceries...I hear it's gone up again to around $2.20 or so...there are only 2 gas stations in town...I can't get very much gas...usually enough to get me home and have enough to get to town again next week...cripe...all the jobs are at least 40 miles away....and the pay scale they pay women up here is something from the dark ages....my lawnmower is thirsty....I gotta get a cow or something this is crazy

Did you read the whole article?  For real use, it needs an air compressor which will require a motor which is run on fuel.  They somehow must be morons because they ended up only getting 94mpg with it in "real" world testing.

DesignCaddy, where do you live that you get a tax break for getting a hybrid?  Right now, the only practical hybrid (I say that because most people need more than two seats) is the Honda Civic.  But, for the cost, you only gain about 10mpg.  You would have to drive the car about 5 years before you break even on the extra cost of it. 

I think you will see a whole lot more hybrids in the next 4 years.  That and more diesel options.  The government gave funding to the car companies about 7 years ago, and they are putting pressure on them to show results.

Here in Canada, there are a couple of choices of hybrid cars, one of which is by Honda indeed (not the Civic, the one they sell here is called the Insight).  But they sell for about $10,000 more. I calculated once that I would have to own the car for 10 years to make my money back in gas savings.  But a few more hybrids are coming out this year (even a minivan), and more every year.  The prices will drop eventually.

As it has been said, don't blame the US economy for the price of oil in the US right now. The price increase is worldwide. It has nothing to do with Bush's poor performance within the US internally.  It may on the other hand have a lot to do with Bush's international policies - like, oh, I dunno, the war in Irak maybe...
Anyway, I'm not gonna go too much there. Let it just be said that I said over a year ago that the post-war would be very ugly.  I'm no Nostradamus, it was very predictable to anybody who has a little common sense. And it's only just started.  Expect oil prices to go up even more. Maybe double what it is today.

Paxx, we have the insight, too, but also have a Civic with a hybrid in it.  Luckily, the hybrid in the Civic doesn't make unreasonable priced.  But, it also doesn't get as good of mileage as the Insight.

 

Yeah. They also have a pure air-powered car too. I want that pure air-powered car, since I never go very far anywhere anyway, just enough to get to college and back.

They also have cars that run off of Laundry Soap. So go figure....

karma, around here (pennsylvania) i''ve only seen a few hybrids, but someone in my office has one and mentioned she is taxed less from the us gov on the car, as a clean air tax break or something of that sort for going with the hybrid car, to help offset the cost of investing in the new technology and as a reward for being enviromentally friendly. i''ve been told the same is true in california where said cars are much more abundant.

now something that really ticks me off.. adversely, you are supposed to be taxed extra when you buy a large vehicle like an suv or truck with bad gas milage, as a penalty.. but hummers, excursions, navigators, are EXEMPT from that penalty. so what the hell is the point of having the tax to begin with, if the worst milaged vehicles are worse then the ones they are taxing?

Anyone hear about the up and coming Hydrogen Feul Cell Cars? 0 pollution and over 100 miles to the gallon!! only draw back? no more sweet roaring of your roadster...or in my case, an 11 yr old Honda Civic with about 200,000 miles on it.

DC...if the US taxing is anything like the moronic Oz regulations then these over-size 'Toorak Tractors' [we call the 4WDs] are classified as commercial vehicles and have discounted registration as they not 'passenger vehicles - private'.

It stinks because their truck tyres also do more damage to the road surface, other cars, and pedestrians and should be penalized for that alone, irrespective of their gas-guzzling prowess...

 

BTW...'Toorak Tractor'.....Toorak is an upper class twit suburb of Melbourne...and the Range Rovers there are for mum to pick up the kids from the Private schools 500 yards away.....they NEVER venture onto unsealed roads....EVER.

classified as commercial vehicles.. that would be the loophole.. and like everything else, they aren't used for their stated purpose. i've never seen an suv commercial where they show little chicks driving haphazardly around tiny city streets and taking up two parking slots in garages.. they're all offroading and 4x4ing.
