In app way to quit Deskscapes 2026?

And also playlists keep going blank after a while.

This is kind of a multi part post that's both bug report and a question, so bear with me please.

I recently upgraded from Deskscapes 11 to Deskscapes 2026, and used one of the activations for my newer PC. I moved over my background playlist from my old PC, and on my new PC it'll play for a bit, but eventually it just stops transitioning and goes blank.

Now, i actually had this exact same problem with my old PC with Deskscapes 11. Restarting the PC didn't help, nor force quitting Deskscapes, or just changing the background to something else and then switching back. Now they would restart the playlist, but it would eventually go blank again. Eventually i discovered the "quit Deskscapes" button with the settings drop down button in Deskscapes 11. I used that, and i haven't had that problem on my old PC since, even after I switched my old PC to also use DS 2026. My new PC didn't have DS11, so it hasn't had that same treatment, but it seems like there's something about the app shutting itself down that helps it restart correctly the next time, and it can't be replicated by force quitting through task manager.

So all this to say, is there an option to quit DS2026 from inside the program itself and I'm missing it somewhere? Or, if it has been removed entirely, can it be added back? It seemingly helped solve a very annoying issue previously.

Ok, I was looking at DS 2026 on both my old PC and new PC, and my old PC does still have the "disable deskscapes" button where the settings are, above "interface options." The "disable deskscapes" option is missing entirely on my new PC...

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. From what I understand you can always disable Deskscape just by applying any default Windows wallpaper. Right Click on desktop->Personalize->Background->Select background from there. Have you tried these steps?

Also, From what I discover, you will need to apply any deskscape wallpaper to have the "Disable Deskscape" menu item to appear.

Thank you,

Ending the process in Task Manager was never going to do what that button did. DeskScapes 2026 runs with a service behind it, and other users here have reported that force-ending the task just brings it back a moment later. A kill is closer to a restart than a shutdown, which fits what you saw.

The tray icon is worth a look before anything else, including the hidden overflow area behind the arrow. DeskScapes 2026 has one, and 26.0.1.1 (7/27/2026) specifically fixed the tray icon not always showing. If yours is missing entirely, confirm you are on 26.0.1.1 rather than an earlier 26.x build.

On the settings entry basj pointed you at, that is the published off switch and the closest thing 2026 has. I am not going to tell you it does the same thing internally as the old quit button, because I have not confirmed that it does, and there is no documented in-app exit in 2026 that matches the DeskScapes 11 one.

The blanking is worth separating from the quit question, and there is a quick test for it. Next time the playlist stops and goes blank, before you restart or reapply anything, hold Shift and right-click the desktop. On 26.0.1.1 you can also right-click and pick "Show more options".

If the background comes straight back that way, the loader dropped and the playlist itself is fine, which is a different problem with a different cause. Worth knowing rather than making a habit of, since Neil Banfield has been clear that the shift-right-click route is a fallback path, and getting your wallpaper back with it means the normal loader failed.

One thing not to bother with: the uninstall, reboot and reinstall advice for mismatched DeskScapes 11 files does not apply to your new machine, since it never had 11 on it.
