Video Dev Journal: Eidolon Frigates | Sins of a Solar Empire II: Harbinger

It's time to take a close look at the Frigate class Ships available to the Eidolon, the dark and sinister new fourth faction added in Sins of a Solar Empire II: Harbinger.

We'll examine the Nethril Husk Heavy Frigate, the Kaziel Shade Cloak Frigate, Sythren Onslaught Missile Frigate, Ithasaz Invader Colony Frigate and the Azgerin Suppressor Point-Defence Frigate.

Eidolon Ships all generate Corruption as they fight, increasing their damage output as they do, while suffering gradual damage to their own rather low Hull Point pools once maximum Corruption levels are reached.

Many have active use abilities that expend Corruption for various effects, and so timely use of these abilities can stave off some of the worst negative effects of Corruption at the expense of temporarily losing some of their combat prowess.

Balancing Ship Corruption is a core feature of the Eidolon's tactical combat gameplay.

Corruption sounds like a per ship resource with a feedback loop on it rather than another energy bar, which is not a shape the current three factions have as far as Ive played them.

What I want to know is whether its a general system that happens to be switched on for the Eidolon, or bespoke to that one faction. General means its a lever the rest of us could pull in an overhaul, hardcoded means we just get to watch it.

Low hull pools plus damage that climbs the longer a fight runs also reads like their frigates want short decisive engagements, assuming the curve moves fast enough to matter at frigate scale.

If you own the DLC you can use the new systems in mods.

That answers it, thanks. Exposed to mods means Corruption is a lever rather than a spectator feature, which is the half I was hoping for.

The catch is that anything built on it carries Harbinger as a hard requirement for everyone who installs it. For a full overhaul that is a fair trade. For a two file balance tweak it is a lot to ask of the people downloading it, so I would expect most small mods to leave the new systems alone even now that they can reach them.
