Carousel Animation

Question not a problem

Just curious what controls or enables the floating animation on the carousel windows? On two of my machines the windows have a nice subtle floating animation that looks really nice but it's missing on my third machine. I didn't notice a setting for it. The machine that I don't see it on is my gaming machine which probably has the most powerful graphics card of all of them. Video card driver issue maybe?

Sorry to hear you are having issues. First to ensure it get properly install, Please try, uninstall AltTabby, reboot immediately (important), download latest version available in your account product download page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products. Install it, reboot immediately again. Retest it and report back.

If the issue still appear, we need more information.

  1. Your Windows 11 full version and OS Build number. Use Winver.exe to get these numbers.
  2. Details on your Graphics card/s. Perhaps, you also have integrated graphics on your Motherboard.

I think I spoke too soon. After uninstalling, rebooting and re-installing the animation was work. I just noticed I went to switch tabs and it's gone. I assume it's running into an issue after the computer, or the program is running for a while.

Video Card is Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070

  • Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.

  • Go to Advanced → Performance → Settings.

  • In the Visual Effects tab, look for Animate controls and elements inside windows.

    • If unchecked → client area animations are disabled.

    • If checked → animations are enabled.

Everything on that tab was enabled. It dos show the animations right after I reboot for a few minutes. I'm thinking a may just need an updated video driver. My NVidia app won't start, gives me a very unhelpful error message and just say can start. That may have something to do with it.

Before you go chasing the video driver, there is a cheap test that tells you whether this is a driver problem at all.

Next time the animation stops, do not reboot and do not restart AltTabby. Open the AltTabby config, switch the mode (list vs thumbnail), then switch it straight back.

If the animation comes back, the state that went wrong is inside AltTabby and the driver is probably not your culprit. That toggle is Neil's, from the 0.70 beta thread. A user there had a different symptom, the standard Windows switcher showing up instead of AltTabby, and the mode toggle brought it back without restarting anything. It has not been tested against the animation, so treat it as a test rather than a fix.

While it is in the broken state, open Task Manager, go to the Details tab, and count how many copies of AltTabby64.exe are running. Two copies was the signature in that other report, and it turned up on machines set to launch AltTabby with Windows.

If the toggle does nothing and there is only one process, that pushes it back outside AltTabby and your driver hunch is the better lead.

I tried switching the mode and switching back but that didn't fix the animate. I checked task manager and there were 2 Alt-Tabby processes running. I ended one of them and Alt-Tabby became disabled. I ended the other and restarted Alt-Tabby without rebooting and the animations came back

Something else weird just happened. I reboot because my Fences had an update and now AltTabby won't load at all. I'm not sure if it's related to the Fences update for not. If I load the AltTabby configuration windows, the Alt-Tab functionality works. If I close the window, it doesn't. I don't even get the default Windows Alt-Tab functionality. If I disable AltTabby the default Windows functionality doesn't return either.

One more update. I reflexively use the alt tab combination all the time and just noticed that the AltTabby is now working. I didn't reboot or anything since the last message. The animation is disabled and there is a second task running 

AltTabby64.exe --from-service
AltTabby64.exe -service

Not sure if any of this is helpful or not but thought I would pass it along.
