Do you miss the consume spirit spell that Gallowman had? Here's a quick and dirty way to add it.

Find the CoreAbilities.xml file and search for consumespirit.  Edit the ability to match the following and it will appear in the Mage tree.  I would prefer to make it a spell you get from a quest, but haven't figured that out yet.

  <AbilityBonus InternalName="Spell_ConsumeSpiritAbility">
    <AbilityBonusType>Unit_Level</AbilityBonusType>
    <AbilityBonusType>Unit_Spell_Rank</AbilityBonusType>
    <AbilityBonusOption InternalName="Spell_ConsumeSpirit">
      <DisplayName>TXT_ABILITIES_SPELL_CONSUMESPIRIT_DISPLAYNAME</DisplayName>
      <Description>TXT_ABILITIES_SPELL_CONSUMESPIRIT_DESCRIPTION</Description>
      <Icon>T_ConsumeSpirit_Icon.dds</Icon>
      <PerkTreePosX>5</PerkTreePosX>
      <PerkTreePosY>1</PerkTreePosY>
      <GameModifier>
        <ModType>Unit</ModType>
        <Provides>TXT_ABILITIES_SPELL_CONSUMESPIRIT_PROVIDES_UNIT</Provides>
      </GameModifier>
      <CombatRating>20</CombatRating>
      <IsCombatAbility>1</IsCombatAbility>
      <Prereq>
        <Type>AbilityBonusOption</Type>
        <Target>Unit</Target>
        <Attribute>Affinity</Attribute>
      </Prereq>
      <Type>Spell</Type>
      <AIData AIPersonality="AI_General">
        <AIPriority>5</AIPriority>
      </AIData>
      <Cost>1</Cost>
    </AbilityBonusOption>
  </AbilityBonus>

I actually do. Consume Spirit was a fun utility spell and gave Gallowman a bit more identity. Nice little workaround for anyone who misses it without having to wait for an official change.

Willie's own preference is the right one and worth saying out loud. In the Mage tree this stops being Gallowman's spell. It becomes a pick like any other, available to whoever spends the point, and the thing Violetta liked about it was that it belonged to somebody in particular.

That matters to me more than it might to most people, because the perk trees are where my sovereign builds actually live. A cost-one entry is not free. It sits next to whatever else I wanted at that depth, so I either take it every game or never touch it, and that is usually the sign a spell has stopped doing identity work.

The quest version is the harder half and I have not solved it either. Hanging an ability off a quest reward is the part I would actually want, and the tidy tree entry is the part that turned out to be easy, which is the wrong way round.

I would rather not have it at all than have it as a tree pick, which probably sounds ungrateful towards someone who went and did the work of restoring it.

Violetta put her finger on it. The spell was a fact about Gallowman. Once anyone can spend a point and have it, the fact is about the tree instead, and he goes back to being a stat block with a good name on it.

My current sovereign has an heir I am quietly dreading handing anything to, and the only reason that works is that the game keeps telling me things about the two of them I did not choose. Anything I pick off a list stops being about them almost immediately.
