Royalties Paid?

Just curious, but are the fine Artist of these Skins and Wallpapers being paid some of the "MONEY" Wincustomize makes by "CHARGING" people to download them? Somebodies getting screwed.

they are not charging for the downloads, stupid!
They are charging for the leeching of bandwidth and usage of server hardware!
All files are uploaded voluntarily!

Go troll somewhere else!

charged to download, huh? who's being charged anything? you get 50 megs of stuff for free. after that, all they ask is something in return for your use of the bandwidth needed to operate the site. you want to pay the thousands of dollars needed to keep this site up with money from your pocket and allow others to get stuff for free? i'd also venture to say that a vast majority of the users who download things from the site are using the freeware versions of the software, so there goes the theory of stardock making tons and tons of money from the site.

your not worth it, your questions are divisive and deception. I would carry on but then again the point would be lost and moot to begin with. One must take into consideration the absolute meaning they hold for the site and the art before responding to such a thread.

What would lambasting you on your lack of intelligent rational processing and manner in which you decide to display your ignorance do other than drag the site down on the whim of a Noid stuck in the Void they design in delusion of self worth so massive it not only expands to the bounds of all in it's presences but also where it might travel while on line?

One hint, don't confuse yourself, your opinion only holds meaning and value unto your person beyond that it is a far reach.

You are correct in one point though, Someone has been screwed which is self evident. The question is, do they at this time question not taking the trip to the clinic...

No we don't get payed however most people who download also upload stuff you see?

93667 <- Thats a low number... wondering what you got in your my skins directory...

What a surprise! Its empty!

But anyway, my paypal is [email protected] so feel free to make a donation, as you don't upload things but have been arround for ages I gues it would be fair right...
I don't get payed from wincustomize but you imply that people should be paying... With other words, You have an empty library but do download, so actually you are the one who is 'screwing' us.

BTW, who wants to lose some money by taking my bet: The guy is pissed because he has hit the 50Meg limit and isn't going to pay...
If you would just submit, or pay, maybe WC could then pay us skinners for submitting work, and again, who is 'screwing' us?

btw, who is paying the GUI olympic prizes?

Why is everybody skinning in the first place, because they want to make money? No, because its fun.
So I gues we should all just stop sharing, ask frogboy to take the library's offline and then we are all happy... >

Ahatfield, No, we (the artists) do not get any type of monetary compensation from WC or Stardock. We upload/share our work for free and out of the goodness of our hearts and it is also our own decision to share our work.
But just to educate you on how this works for me (as it does for many others) If I was to look for a space in the net to upload my work I would have to shell about $10.00 a month (for a really cheap host) and that will get me a domain name, some 50Mb of storage and some 20Gb of bandwidth. Then I will have to design the entire webpage and then after that I would have to advertise all over the dam net so I can get a couple of hundred people to visit my site.
So instead of wasting over $100.00 dollars a year and go thru the trouble of creating a webpage and advertise it. I rather pay $20.00 here and upload all my work and have over a million of people view and download my work, which in exchange gets me clients that view and like my work enough to hire me to make designs for them and that is where my monetary compensation comes in.
See how easy that is?

So instead of ranting about who or how anyone gets pay or not, maybe you should try to make things work for your self or simply keep quiet.

Ditto Styl.
BTW. Can I go with you on that bet? I wanna make some money

Hmm. I always thought it is fine for artists to have a host for their skins for free also... And often forgotten : Wincustomize is not the only site asking for subscriptions. Ever had a deviantart subscription as an example ? You will note the difference... But nobody complains about that surprisingly.

"someone is getting screwed"

yep you're right. Someone is. each person who works night AND day to keep this server up and running, who go out of their way, taking time away from family and friends to make sure that people who paid their subscription (and even some who won't) can both view, comment on, download , and even whine on this msg board, can access this site with ease and speed. Making sure the quality remains at the high standard that's been set over the years, and assisting those same whiners in fixing problems the whiners themselves have created (in most cases).
Those people do get a paycheck(most of them. some do it out of love for the product and the community), but I would stake money on the fact that the minimal paycheck they take home in no way compensates for the "bullshirt" they have to put up with here, nor the loss of quality family time while they are "doing their job".
so yes, SOMEONE is getting screwed. by no means YOU.
now , do you have some relevant point to make?

didn't think so!

or are you just another whiner?.....

I uploaded my first WB skin at the GUIOlympics...hopefully it gets through moderation so I can start collecting the royalty checks

The bootskin I uploaded here was part joke (showing how easy it was to make a bootskin) and part wanting to go through the process of uploading something to better understand it. It's gotten over 2600 downloads...go figure

Funny how some folks only are "concerned" about authors and surface on the messageboard only *after* they've reached their download cap.

It's always amazing how people develop a sense of moral outrage in favor of those whose works they've been using only AFTER they've downloaded hundreds of megabytes of it.

Well said Brad.
I wonder if he had these same concerns about us artists getting 'screwed' while he was downloading our work.

You can get a registered domain name and hosting for about $40 a year.

There are many hosts with different prices out there. The one I took as an example is Geocities from Yahoo http://geocities.yahoo.com/home/

But even at $40.00 USD a year, you still gonna have to design/create the web site/pages and then how many people will actually visit the site?
Meanwhile, you pay $20.00 here for 2 years and not only you get to post all your work, but you dont need to set up a webpage. You also get a vast amount of exposure since WC has 1,000,000+ visitors.
You do the math
