Good morn to all,

I just found this site yesterday and I must say there is a LOT to take in here. Definitely more than what I could do in a single sitting.

Hope you dont mind I have a few questions that will probably be answered after I have read everything on every section of the site, but just dont have the time to right now...

1. I browsed around a little and could throw out props to many people for the impressive work I have seen, but the three that have really stood out to me so far are:

HG_Eliminators Green turtle desktop skin thing
Starone's many glassy icons
Tiggz Rubicon and GT2 Blue

2. The whole reason I found this site was I was looking for some icons to use or ways to create them for use on my website (changing them to GIFs). So, first question is can I use icons found here on my website (changing them to GIFs)?

3. I am a user of Photoshop. But Photoshop won't open or save icons that I am aware of. Can you reccomend and point me to any decent FREEWARE icon creation/editing software?

4. Ok, like I said I just found this place yesterday so I have only read a quick description of the different products but have already forgotten most of what I read due to the amounts of it and such. I have downloaded what seems to be a 30 day trial of the iconpackager, though I have not actually used it yet. I just read a very ugly post by Ice.... I guess what I need is without asking you to repeat everything about all the products and such, can someone just kinda explain to me the procedures for how things work. was any of his post true? Do I have to pay for the trials just to try them out or something like that? His raving rant kinda confused me.


5. I use Win 2000 Pro. Are there any disadvantages to using any of these packages for this OS (think Rubicon, Green Turtle, etc..)? Do problems arise everytime Microsoft puts out a new patch or hotfix? Any compatibility issues with newer versions of software (Microsoft Office, Anti-virus, Macromedia products, Adobe products, etc...)?


I am sure I have more questions, but I guess I need to find out the answers to these first.

ok to answer the question about useing the icons for a web site. most images here are under copywrite.so without the authors explicit permission no you cant, but you can find a set you like, and then e mail the author asking permission and maybe offering a mention and link to their site in exchange. not only is asking permission the proper thing to do, it is also the legal thing to do... also is it a buisness site or a personal site? this question will be asked of u,so i will ask it here.
while the community here is very giving, a buisness that would benefit monetarily from the icon use. would have a better chance to obtain permission if there was a cash compensation.

the 2000 pro question. there has been a few disadvantages to having 2000 pro mainly with icon packager and WMP.. only because many of the icons/skins for these are now useing the alpha transparency. apparently 2000 doesent support it.. so the icons will have black borders and the skins will have blacked out areas..

irfanview can open and save icons if u want u can make a icon in paint,paintshoppro, or any image making/editing software and use irfanview to save in a icon or gif format....and its a free program

oh and if you get icon developer by stardock, you can edit icons as pngs in photoshop or any graphics editter.

thank you for your responses.

Although, I wish the response would have been different related to the compatibility issues with win2000. Sounds like it would not be a good idea for me to try and customaize my interface with these products based on HG's response.

And as for icons on the web, well, since i am still not exactly sure what it is that i am trying to do, i guess i will hold off on that part too. But, will definitely ask the artist when the time comes.

while there are quite a few skins and icons that are built for xp there are a great many that are 2000 compatable. i run win 2000 pro..i bought the whole stardock suite,i wouldnt use any pc without it. in my opinion its well worth the $

i only answered the question of if theres some disadvantages to 2000pro, yes, but they are few and are outweighed by the advantages.these programs "expecially desktopX" make any user interface so much more fun and cool to look at it aint funny ..browse the many screen shots and see what can be done ...while there are a few disadvantages to 2000 its still worth the investement it you want a custom looking pc check my screens
