The Rating System is going to be changing..

The Rating System is going to be changing..

Okay, we've made posts and news items trying to get people to rate things in a reasonable manner but all have failed.

As someone else correctly wrote, the rating system here is a JOKE.

There are basically two problems: People who rate everything high and griefers who go around sabotaging other people's ratings.

The new system WILL work as follows. Yes, most of you will be ticked off for different reasons. Tough. The system is broken, we're going to fix it. Play time is over. It will work this way:

There will be a WEIGHT used to calculate the ratings. A rating by a citizen will counts a 1Xtheir rating. An apprentice 2X their rating, Master Apprentice 3X their rating and so on.

So when an admin or moderator rates a skin, it matters.  Now, the default rating from moderation will still only count as a weight of 1. But as people deliberately put in the effort to rate something, it will matter.

Yes, it's unfair. It's unequal, whatever.  But the current system has become meaningless.

I have seen excellent ObjectDock icons get ratings of 4 because some griefer comes along and gives a bunch of them 1 totally counter balancing an admin rating of 7 (where the admin in question makes icons for a living).

I'm not sure when we'll get to this. It's pretty high on the priority list. This will probably result in a more skins going down in rating than skins going up in rating. A rating of 5 is an average looking skin. NOT 8. Some people seem to rate things as if anything under an 8 is bad. No, 5 is AVERAGE. Most skins should be rated at around a 5. Not 8.

people who haven't bought something can only download 50 megs of stuff so this really isn't a way to stem downloads.

The rating system is being changed (at least to my knowledge) because of abuse and complaints.

Buko22....Frogboy says it like it is.  I'm sure he doesn't need a third party's translation/interpretation....

What I can't figure out is how Stardock/WinCustomize going to get all those Journeymen to "control what skins are shown to non-members"??

Now you crack me up...

I wasn't going to post for a while, except for the odd response to someone needing support in some manner now and then.

But...

you really REALLY crack me up so much I just had to let you know...

Mindless and ineffectual as your post is in my opinion, it still gave me a very good laugh.

Oh btw: I've been thinking that part of keeping you member ranking should also be connected to rating and commenting a certain percent each month. Or something along those lines, I am extreamly bad about it, not rating and commenting, but I still think it should be a part of it... I know I have said in the past before that I was going to change that aspect of my visits and make sure to comment and rate, yet have not followed through as I should. Dunno if others let it slip like I have habit of doing, but it could help in prompting those of us who do let it slip, get back on track with a notice or some such to that affect ( a reminder )...

anyway...

enough from me, back to lurking...

I guess this isn't the forum for this but it is along the same vein. I have a bit of an issue with the citizen/apprentice system. Insofar as people that pay $50 a year for object desktop being "only" citizens and having a 1x vote. I've been a loyal subscriber and a semi-active submitter for quite some time now but my vote only counts for 1x because I haven't paid for additional services?

object desktop owners don't get a vote. You have to have bought a wincustomize subscription, or be promoted to apprentice or above to vote.

Passing grade in US schools is 70%? Really?  Interesting... In Canada, it's 60%.  But I like the US way better, if it's really 70%.  The problem with a 60% passing grade is that it means that you didn't understand 40% of what you learned, and that you'll need to understand in order to learn the new subjects in the following grade.  How are you supposed to understand what the teacher is talking about when 40% of what he assumes you know is way over your head.

Anyway, the school system and the ratings here are two different issues.  It's not like you have to have a 7 in order to be permitted to make your next skin.  But wheather it's because of my schooling system, or I don't know what, but I still consider 60% as "average" and 70% as "satisfactory".  But it all depends on what you expect and what you know you're capable of. To go back to school comparison, if I got a 70% in math, I was quite happy, but if I got 70% in Litterature, History or Geography, thhan I was disapointed cause I knew I could do better.

If that ever came true it would suck.

Yeah I should have said acceptable or average mark rather than passing. I think passing is in the mid 60's here....a "D" mark, but it wasn't anymore acceptable when I was growing up than a "F" mark or an incomplete.

Frogboy I like the 1-5 stars idea. and why not just define them with words vs. just numbers to help people better accept and undestand a rating

***** - Best (10) The epitomy of skinning blab blab blab
**** - Better (8-9) Top artistry, talent, blab blab blab
*** - Good (5-7) Basic and complete, nothing Wows you, blab blab blab
** - Average (3-4) Developing artist, missing elements, blab blab blab
* - Poor (1-2) Why is this posted here blab blab blab

I was just thinking last night about a word system instead of a star system.

Great plan!! Nice to see it happen, sad that it had to be implemented.
