What's nice about snow chains is when somebody who knows nothing puts them on their car/truck and doesn't "maintain" them. It's amazing the damage they can do if they let go!
Kona, I doubt that you are going to drive on a freeway with chains on your tires....unless you don't like your teeth
If you have a rear wheel drive car, put a ton of weight in the back of it. (And get snow tires for the back of them....or put a battery in your Escort...)
I grew up in Northern Michigan. It used to snow so much that you could look out your window and not tell where the snowbank ended and the snow covering your car started. It's possible to get around in that stuff, you just have to pay attention to what's going on and know how to handle your car. I remember an ice storm up there once that you couldn't stand on the road. If your car stopped, it would slide off the road (if the road was sloped right). Somehow I made it home from school and my parents made it home from work (poor Dad worked even further north).
I kinda' miss all that....

odd thing about up there is everyone talked about how they were all going to leave and none of them did... I mean some left, but all return in time.

Barely...I was 4
However, I do have a picture of my Mom with bell bottoms on sitting on top of her car. You can't tell it's her car, though, because everything was completely snowed in. It very well could have been that year because I was extremely little at the time.
