New Computer Build HELP!

Need some help to all you computer experts.

I am currently building a new system for a friend. He went on Ebay and purchased a New PC Chips motherboard (new in the box even) along with a new case and a 400 watt power supply.

The board runs socket 370 processors as in Pentium 2 and Celeron but this one CAME with a VIA Giga Pro 600 mhz chip and a stick of 64 mb SD RAM.

I added out of my own pocket a 540 meg gig hard drive and a 32x CD ROM.

I hooked everything up and tried to load windows 98 (my friend says that windows 98 will work until he gets a stick of 256 SD RAM and a 40 gig Hard Drive) but windows did not want to load all the way. It keep having problems right at the detecting hardware phase.

I tracked down the problem to the stick of 64 meg SD RAM. Bad stick. So I gave a stick from my own system to him. (I am down to 128 for XP > )

I proceed to load 98 and it worked and was stable.

I then got him a 1 gig drive and am now trying to load 98 and ME but both will not take.

Any ideas? What Am I doing wrong?

Your right. My current setup is a Dell pentium 3 and XP.
No mac for awhile, I have had enough of OS X being slow.

Where exactly does the install konk out Kona? Does the pc atleast recognize the 1gig HD?

Drivers, my friend. Those VIA need the updated three in one drivers. The trick is to get them on the hard drive so that windows will load properly. You might also try a Bios Flash, that might help. The Bios on the motherboard maybe seriously out of date.

Whats a VIA Giga Pro 600 mhz chip?


It is a Pentium based Cyrix 3 chip made by VIA.

Also, you said you had gotten Win98 to run stable...so what exactly are you having trouble with? We cant help if we dont know the problem...


Removing the 540 meg HD and using the 1 Gig HD through everything off.

You might also try a Bios Flash, that might help. The Bios on the motherboard maybe seriously out of date.


I would not now where to look. The Website for this board is confusing.

Is it a single partition assigned to the whole 40 gb drive? Fat32 doesn't support much over 4 gb per partition.

I would recommand windows xp since NTFS supports single partition the size of 40 gb.

When switching or installing a new hard disk, make sure the BIOS recognize the size of the new disk also make sure to format the new disk prior to installing the OS.
Also, I dont think installing Win 98 and Me in a 1Gb disk is a good idea as you will leave practically no free space to install/run any mayor programs.

I'm assuming this is a used HD. Run TuffTest http://www.tufftest.com/free.htm on it. May just be a bad HD.

People asking for advice is fine with me and I will help where I can, but almost constantly asking for advice on buying different computer or components and now for advice on building a computer is a little bit indecisive don't you think.

It puked when I loaded the Intel Video driver. Turns out they must have shipped the wrong driver disk with the MoBo because I dl'ed the latest intel 810 Graphics driver and now the system is once again stable.

I guess I should tell my friend to get a bigger (maybe 32 meg?) video card. 2 mb sucks.

No it is 1 partition on a 1 gig drive. The drive is working great.

as soon as my friend gets a stick of 256 SD RAM and the new 20 gig or 40 gig drive he will get XP as well. he is also looking into a Pentium 3.

BIOS regognizes the drive, no problems there. I used killdisk to do a low level format. no worries there either.

I installed 98 and have about 700 free megs for space. he just wants a internet machine for ebay business, nothing more until he gets XP.

Stumpy listen - if you can not help me, fine. I did not seek advice for myself but for a friend who has no internet access.

Why do you feel the need to pick on me?

I had a problem and I figured Iplural and Yrag among others could help me.

What's the point of having a community? Or having a message board? I'm still kind of new at this, but I thought it was so that people could share the wealth of knowledge and experiences they have with each other, whether it be advise on something or help with a problem. And to also enjoy each others' company? I must be a n00b for thinking that
