New to this, thanks for any opinions...I've had desktopX for a week now and have changed some icons and added 2 objects (mp3 player, computer usage) and some new ones that I applied some of my folders to as shortcuts (animated icons). It's (the computer) has been fine up until this morning. Suddenly, my virtual memory is well above 45% on a continual basis and is disrupting other programs. What gives? Can I do something about this? Why did it suddenly happen? I was led to believe that desktopX took up only a small amount of "energy", yet when I go to the task manager (Win 2000 prof.), desktopX is using about 18000 kb to run. Any suggestions? Thanks.

As mentioned...I have the drive analysis and an mp3 player. Otherwise, just icons for the normal desktop shortcuts, ie, my computer, my documents, etc. 3 of them are download animated briefcases that I've applied folder shortcuts to, but other than that, nothing else. Should I be changing my memory? I like Win2000prof. because it does it for me as needed, but...

This is as per my system summary.

Cpu capacity is 18.64mb
I've got 28% free space

Shouldn'y have any problems with those stats, have you tried rebooting

What video card do you have installed?

There are a number of utilities on the net which allow you to monitor and adjust
memory settings.

TaskInfo2003 is such a utility that give you more in depth information than most that
I have come across.

I would download and install the trial version so you can see exactly what is doing what.
This application gives the best in depth analysis across the board for your resources...

yes...no luck. thanks for thinking about it though. i'm stumped. should desktopx be using upwards of 18000kb to run? seems high.

THis will allow you to see exactly what is doing what and when it is doing it.

The network connections also comes in handy for finding out exactly what those
stupid svchost (generic) services that Windows loads up and never explains what
they are...

thank you for all the suggestions. i downloaded the trial version of taskinfo2003 and see that it's a powerful program. oh, and to those who are wondering...i misspelled 'virtual'

If someone hasn't suggested running AdAware yet, I'd toss that in. Along with a good online virus scan if it keeps up.

depending on the systems configuration, (excluding as goodmorphing points out, virus, spyware and so on)your Video card could be playing into the issue to some extent.

Some graphics cards share slices of the CPU and Memory which can cause some really interesting things when a video cards driver ends up leaking in memory, or refuses to release memory and time slices when it is finished with them, only to grab more of those resources on top of what it already has when needed again...

That is just one possibility and it is also something which can happen with any version of Windows including NT...

It is also a real issue with Motherboards that have Integrated Video... Stay away from those, stay very far away....
