The part I hate is the red pointer thing in the middle of the keyboard and the red mouse buttons.

FYI this is the dell I was spealing of. Way better looking than IBM.

Dell makes a good *home* user system and a fantastic server...

But as far as a Network laptop, it does not come close to an IBM...

As far as looks go, It is like saying a Porsche (sic) SUV is equal to
or better than a Saburban Hi/Lo 4x4 when it comes to doing what a 4x4
is ment to do.

One looks neat and the other will go anywhere you need it to. One is
an EGO (yuppie toy) boost hence the lable SUV and the other is a TRUCK.

I just dislike ibm, thats all. I owned several and they all sucked.

I agree. It's not wise to judge a product on how many units get sold.

IBM doesn't focus on grandmas and high-school kids, they have a different focus group. You'll probably not ever be assailed with "Dude! Yer gettin a Thinkpad!", nor will I expect you to ever see asinine "IBM interns" commercials.

As corny as those Dell ads are, I do not use them as a bases for judging the quality of Dell products. I just look at what's inside the box. I think IBM Thinkpads are pretty good since I have an old one running on a Pentium 60 Mhz. It makes a good porable MP3 Player and e-book reader.

I wasn't rating the quality by the commercials, sorry if it seemed so. I was just pointing out that Dell has a very different way of marketing their products, and their tactics have a lot more to do with the number of their laptops sold than the quality.

IBM really doesn't need to do the grass-roots, song-and-dance thing, since their livelihood doesn't depend on getting one in every household. That was the mistake Gateway made, and I don't even want to start in on their 'quality'.

That was all I was saying.

I'm not a big fan of Gateway myself even though my home state, South Dakota, is the birth place of the Gateway company.

Hmmm this icon suite you speak of... where can I go to learn the program/ code, I got nuthin to do this weekend, and I love learning new stuff for pcs. And how much money could I make in a suite? Just curious.

And its pretty slick to see all the pc debates goin on here. They are all good computer's which come with their own unique perks. I do like that Voodoo PC, and even the Toshiba looked nice. I have a Dell 8200 Inspiron right now, and its ok. But I want to get into programs like Photoshop, Flash, MaYa, etc., and other areas of website design. I have my own site, but it's nuthin special in design ( I wanna learn how to make it much more attractive, although its not half bad) where I may need an updated pc. Mine is 3 years old. I just like the Alienware PC's and have been watchin the company since its debut. Im not ruling out other pc's, but I still have my heart set on it for now If anyone would like to get together to work on some projects or point me in the right direction to learning some cool programs let me know and Id be glad to recieve and return some assistance!

Nah I only like Apples for image editing and video. I have sufficient programs on my pc, other than that I would never use a mac. Also whoever put up that Voodoo... the thing is $4,670 when upgraded to same specs as the Alienware, so that was a dumb post...

Dell. Dell. Dell. Avoid Dell notebooks with your life. Dells may look nice (Personally, I think they're as ugly as hell,) but their engineering and design is anything /but/ competent. Just take a look in their support forums for releases or notices from Dell about known hardware problems or even recalls.

My roommates have 5 Dell notebooks between the two of 'em and every single one of them has had some design related hardware flaw or failing. The most recent two (coincidentally with the two newest notebooks,) have been a hard drive that not only fails, but DIES, due to heat from the optical drive, and on the newest one, the screen had to be replaced before the notebook was even a week old because it cracked. The problem? He closed it. Yes, it was as simple as that. It turns out, you /have/ to put the little foam insert that it was shipped with back whenever you close it - even though no documentation states this. Why? Because the keys stick up too far. They KNEW this, but they still shipped the model.

IBM notebooks... well, before my Toshiba (which isn't nearly as nice as the IBM,) I had a Thinkpad. Thinkpads are, simply, AWESOME. I think they're beautiful too - utilitarian, to the point. There was /thought/ put into their design, that you don't really notice until you sit down with one and actually /use/ it. The notebook is designed around usability, and not simply looking pretty.

Another brand to look at that not many people know about is Sager. They mostly made notebooks for other companies to rebrand, but they make some /wonderful/ systems. I would -love- to have a Sager. The 8890's are wonderful.

No way, Im good with teaching myself programs, but not that good. I just like learning new programs, and we alll have to admit MaYa is freakin smurf (for those of u who watch Family Guy you will understand that).

My son is looking to get into CGI and such. He's working on a G4 16" ti, 1 gig ram, 60 gig drive, SuperDisk and 256 vid, sweet sucker...

I still think if that is the thing you are looking at doing, the Toshiba I linked into this thread would be the direction to go...

Voodoo has a pretty good high end laptop, but I still think the Toshiba would be my choice.
