Windows Blinds Slows Computer

Everything is fine here, I use clean and simple skins

My computer is roughly the equivalent of yours, and I notice no slow-down at all. A crazy idea, but are all of your drivers up-to-date? (Paying particular attention to DirectX)

Your PC is faster than mine and I hve no probs with WB.

I'm on Win98 and it slows my computer down too!

I got a Celron 455mhz Processor

Well, it doesn't slow it down that much. Not to noticable.

Depends a lot on the skin you use too. Some skins have a serious impact on performance, some you don't notice any difference. Experiment with different skins, try simlper ones, and see if there's any difference.

Paxx said it. There are 'heavy' skins. Also, defrag. Near a gig of skins in a fragmented state will have an impact.

Oh sure, the hardware plays a big part in rendering Windowblinds skins, but the OS also is important. Because of XP features like Hyperpaint and that WB can hook the Themes service, slowdowns are more prone to happen on a 9x/Me system. Plus, UIS2 skins require more process time that UIS1 skins.

I have half the speed of your system and I have no slow down on any skins. I have more trouble with object Dock and DesktopX lags, but not windowblinds or sysmetrix. It just depends on how much memory you are using on your system. Win98 is not a very memory efficient machine. WinXP handles memory much better. After I get slammed maybe I'll come back with some of the tweaks that I used to speed it up a little on WinXP.

My laptop, with crappy videocard, still has same speed with luna, classic or with almost any windowblinds skins. Like other said, some skins is 'heavy'.

absolutely no slowdown whatever. My system is at least three years old and still running like a champ...

I have an Intel 3, 128 megs of ram and using Windows XP(it beats 98&ME by a long shot)and I have no problems at all....runs like a charm, quick as can be!!

try indemnity suites. slick and quick - but there are others. they would be a good test of your system. just an opinion.

Theres always the possibility that you have spyware. Not from windowblinds (I hope ), though, but from websites that download stuff for you, even if you don't ask for it. A good tool to fight it is Ad-Aware. It scans your computer for spyware and gives you the option to delete it. It also scans cookies which can be deleted also, but you'll need to sign in again to this site. No biggie. The site to download it is here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ . I'm not sure how much spyware can lag your computer, though, but its always a good thing to get rid of it.

Citizen r3fr, you have a good idea. That would be one of my recommendations too. But, the wrong program. Spybot Search and Destroy is a much better spyware killer. It also searches for bad registry references which can also slow down the computer. Optimizing your registry is important. If you have never done it before you may notice a hundred bad references. But, be careful. It is better to repair misplaced references than deleting ones that you are unfamilar with. If you mess up your registry, you can kiss windows goodbye. Spybot is free. One of the biggest slow downs is lack of memory resources. I would recommend that you check your msconfig and look for programs that you don't recognize. This could be an indication of spyware. Having to much stuff loaded will definitely slow your computer. For example having mmtask and qttask loaded from Quicktime is useless. It just chews memory. Minimize those preloads. Take out what you don't need. Firewall is important to have pre-loaded and anti virus. And also tray server. This is one important area.

Another very good way to speed up the system is modifying your performance advanced settings. Get there by going to system in the control panel. Choose the advance tab and then performance settings.
Under the performance options choose advanced. you will see three areas. Prcessor scheduling and Memory usage are the important ones for now. Set those two to best performance for programs. That was a major improvement for me when running windowblinds. If your settings are different this may be your problem. Why any home user would want to optimize settings for background services is silly. Try setting both of these to programs. This may solve your memory problem.

There are more optimization tips, but try these for now.

I used to have a celeron. now i have a pentium 3. much better. the pentium 3 works better.

I have a celeron 2GHz with 512MB RAM and I have not experienced any performance issues with Windowblinds. I'm running XP.

Is TheLenko the only other Athlon user here? Come on people, Intel is LOSING the CPU race to the Athlon 64. Yes...The two As. ATI and AMD. Have them and you will have a nice machine. No performance issues with any UIS2 skins. 1GB of RAM.

Sounds good, Kona. I'm planning to keep my AMD 2000+ for another year or three. It'll do until next version of Winblowz comes out. Then I think I'll build a dual-AMD box.
