I have a trial fences and it was expireing in 4 days so I clicked on the notice and purchased .I got an email with my key but I dont know where to put the key to activate

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I think it is best to try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Do I have to move all the short cuts I have put in the fences in the trial
No, I believe, all the Fences is save from the purge but to be safe you should backup your layout snapshot using this guide : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots
