???? If an e-mail server says it is down for three hours to 'recover data'....

Did you save all your emails on their server or on your own HD? If they have to bring more HD online it could mean your data is lost unless they have Backup capability. Be patient and wait GM and the answer will be revealed....inventually. >

As for saving email to HD create a folder on your HD and drag your email to it. That simple. Really.

I thought I was such a beginner that anyone else saving my stuff was better than me. I even thought that so much that I sent the only image I have of my mother to be stored that way. ....they sound so worried....

You can drag online stuff to an off-line folder?





I just had a huge fight with my family....maybe I will never see my mother's face again?

Recovery slower than expected [Status] -

The DB recovery is taking longer than expected. It is now about 70% complete.

Does complete mean that they recovered my stuff? Or does it mean 70% of the potential is explored?

....this is why I do so poorly on multiple choice... so much in life deals with the finer points of linguistics.

At the risk of sounding too optimistic, I interpret the message to mean they have recovered 70% of the data that was there and are still working to recover the remaining 30%.

You may see your mom's face still GM.

if you have a CD-RW drive on your computer, then backing up important data onto standard write once CD's is a good plan. so long as you dont loose the CD's, your backups are fairly safe.

if their backups are anything like the backups we do at work, anything only than say 24 hours should certainly be safe, but anything really recent may not have made it onto the backups

GM - they're recovering backed up data files........unless they have a data loss in the backup files procedure your Mom's face is fine

Thanks everyone! I got my e-mail back and most everything I saved (except the last one or two things and maybe I forgot). The first thing I did was save the pic on two floppys and tuck one away.

I have a CD burner but I made some kind of mistake once and kind of lost my nerve since the disc I was trying to copy was damaged beyond repair and the cd burner needed replaced. I should get over that and try again.

GM sorry to hear about your family and glad you got your mums pic back!!!

Awwww... Thank you everyone. See, this is a community! A family! Thanks for the offer IP. I copied a couple of things since then, but it always gives me a queasy feeling since I don't know why it happened. Something about copying faster than it could write or something.... I get real tense sometimes, especially when it comes to breaking my computer.

with regard to putting things onto CD-ROM, my main computer has a drive that can burn CD's at 20x speed. however, i have found that if there are a lot of files to burn then 12x is the fastest that produces a working CD.

so, burning them at a slower speed seems the simplest and best solution
