Spontaneous resets and a funny grinding noise......

Two wierd things are happening to my computer:

1) It has taken to spontaneously restarting itself. There is no warning at all, no blue screen of death or anything. Just *zap* and it resets. I have no idea why its doing this.

2) It make a very odd grinding noise when it is starting up and it dies down to a quiet grind that continues the whole time the computer is on.

Could these problems be related? I hope if something has to be fixed its not too expensive. If anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing these problems, you comments are welcome.

ah, could be. open your case and see if your CPU fan is functioning correctly...

If it is the CPU fan, the CPU heats up beyond safe temp and flakes out, which could be damaging it. Also if the CPU heats to far it will pop, snap and crakel as it frys.

Power Supply fans going out can cause the power supply to reset...

if it is not the cpu or power supply fan(s?) if could be the hard drive (eek!) which if mechanical shouldn't cause a reboot without the OS erroring in some fassion.

Look in your Control Panal Administrative tools Event Viewer also, as it might indicate some unknown problems...

I had that on my last pc. Spontaneous resets, grinding noise on start-up etc. Turned out to be a faulty hard drive. One day it refused to boot... I suggest you back-up everything while you still can

That's imperative.

Most likely problem is Hard drive or CPU fan......either can be 'terminal'...

Touch the top case of the hard drive, if it feels like rocks is inside it and moving around, it's indeed your hard drive, and back up before rest of your hard drive heads goes.

Best way is install another hard drive with pre-installed OS ( I don't know whats possible with linux so take this advice with grain of salt of your os is linux ) and put the failing drive as secondary drive. That way the failing drive gets used only when youre coping files, prolonging the failing drive's lifetime to few more minutes.

That was how I saved a non-profit organzation's manager's drive files and settings before drive stopped able to spin disks. Engine and spidle were setting stuck repeatly, and there is no way to fix without class AAA clean room.

last time that happended to me my fan went out on my power supply and every time it got to hot it rebooted. I also had the grinding noise in another machine and it was the hard drive.
