Doc moving after editing

Hi, I use fences for a long time but I am facing an issue since I updated it to 3.0.9.11. Previously I was running a version 2. My windows version is the 18363.778. I'm working with 3 screens.

So now each time I edit a .doc (or TXT or anything which can be edited), it moves out of the fence it was into originally and I have to put it back in after having saved it.

Is there a workaround to solve this ?

Thanks :)

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But I can't recreate the issue on my system. Need more information.

1) Windows version, please use Winver.exe for full Windows version numbers.

2) Fences version.

3) Is the issue happen on any Fences or specific fences.

Thanks

Hello, thanks for the reply. The windows version and fences version are written in the initial post...

The issue is happening on any fence.

Ah, sorry I've missed that. Please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling.

Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purge, reinstall using the latest version you just downloaded. Reboot again after the installation. Retest it and report back.

Thank you,

I desinstalled it, executed the Purge_WB.bat but the issue is still occuring. I don't know if it's worth mentioning but the fences come back exactly where they were with the same titles before uninstalling the program, despite the purge. I also searched everything with "fence" and "stardock" on the computer via the everything program and deleted them. After that and reinstallation of fences, the fences came back to the smae place and same titles again. I don't understand where the settings are stored...

Anyway the problem is still there :/

I believe the snapshots you will need to delete manually. There is a guide on how to backup snapshot, that should give you an idea where to look. https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots

Hello, So i desinstalled and purged again + deleted manually remaining stardock related files. Additionnaly I looked in the folder where the snapshots are supposed to be stored but I found nothing. I guess they had been deleted already. Weirdly, when I installed again, all fences went back as usual to their places with their titles. More importantly, the issue is still there. I cannot edit a doc without having it to move to another place in another screen. Very painful.

If I knew before I would have not updated as it was working great, but the popup window asking me to update was annoying me everyday. Is there a way to get the old but good version 2 I had before ?

Thanks.

If you ran that file, Purge_WB which is for WindowBlinds, that would be the reason.  You need to download this one:

http://sd.stardock.com/zubaz/apps/Purge_Fences.bat

Seems that was our fault as you were given the wrong link (reads right, the wrong destination, however). Fixed above now...

That said, it sounds like your issue is the result of MSOffice edited files that create a temp file when editing and then uses it - the temp file - as the new once saved.   Fences is doing what it is supposed to do with a new file (what the file now looks like) and keeping it on the general desktop.

A workaround to try:

  • Put these documents somewhere in your \Documents folder
  • Create a Fences Folder Portal to them on the Desktop
  • Edit and save and it should still be in that Folder Portal Fence

Hi and thanks for the reply. I tried the workaround and it works. Indeed that seems related to office temp files creation which will replace the previous one after being saved.

What is strange though is that I never encountered this issue before updating to fences 3. But It might also be office being updated recently (though I don't think this kind of process of temp file creation is not new). Thanks a lot anyway.

Regards, Marc.
