Right click in file explorer on any left side menu item crashes file explorer

Start10shell is the problem

For a long time I have had a very annoying issue with file explorer crashing and closing every time I right click on a left side menu item. I had enough and today I ran shellxview to find what extension was causing the problem and guess what...Stardock v.1.91 ext: Start10shell class v1.0.0.0 is the cause without any doubt. Any suggestions on how to stop this program/extension from crashing my file explorer?

Here is the report from shexview:

Extension Start10Shell    Shell Extension 1.0.0.0Start10     Shell Extension  Stardock Software, Inc      Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Start10\Start10Shell64.dll                 CLSID:  {6A451C0A-9597-4915-BCCE-6E859BC996B2}             4/10/2019 3:52:21 PM    Included Extensions:  .bat, .exe, .lnk, batfile, exefile, lnkfile

How did ShellXView identify that Start10Shell was causing a crash?

That would be most unexpected given that file has not been modified since 2015 and I think you are the first person ever to report such an issue.   I quickly checked here and am not experiencing similar.

If you wish to disable the extension you can do so by running (from an elevated command prompt) the following command from the Start10 installation folder :

Regsvr32 /u start10Shell64.dll

I used shellxview to disable extensions by program then try to get file explorer to crash. The only program that was left was Start 10 and I tested it several times and it clearly was causing the crash. Will that kill the whole program because I paid for and still want to use it.

No that DLL is purely for offering a right click pin to start10 option.

The rest of start10 will continue to work just fine.

OK I dusted off my cmd prompt skills and used an elevated to run the code from the Start10 folder and I got a popup saying it was successful.  I restarted the PC and tried file explorer again and it still crashes. Should I do the same for the 32.dll?

You can do though the 32 bit version would only be used on a 32 bit process.

An alternative would be to use what you did for testing to disable the extension.

Well I opened shellxview and the extension is gone. And now right click no longer crashes file explorer :-)  Thanks very much for the help! Have a good safe day
