Windows 7 support

Hi all,

I am just looking for a bit of advice.

Microsoft is discontinuing support for windows 7 in January 2020.
They recommend windows 10 on a new computer rather than installing it on your current machine.

My machine is about 8 years old

Any help appreciated.

My PC is 9 years old, has an Intel Core I7 970 processor, 24gb of DDR3 RAM, dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Video Cards and 4 500GB SSD hard drives. I triple boot and it runs Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 just fine.

If your current PC runs Windows 7 just fine, it should run Windows 10 just fine.

If anything, I'd suggest doing the deeper levels of maintenance prior to upgrading to Windows 10...

IE

Update the Bios on your PC - Re-configure as needed.

Update the vBios on your video card(s) if there is an update for it

Do a full surface scan check disk of your hard drive(s)

Clean/replace system fans

Intel Core I7 6700 3.40
8GB DDR3 1600 Memory
Geforce GT610 Graphics card ( no updates available any more)
Hard Drives
1 x Kingston SUV 400S372406 225 SSD drive Windows only on this
2 x WDC WD102EX 00BN5AO 1000 Used for Data and Backup

I don't think Windows Live Mail is available to download anymore. It is likely it will be fine with an in-place windows upgrade, but if you ever do a clean install be aware that you may not find it to install. Unless of course you have the install file(s) on physical media. I would certainly suggest doing a hard backup of any data (all data - not just your email) on this computer before proceeding! I'd even go so far as to exporting your email data, that way it is in a format fit to send to a new email program if necessary. Maybe even install a newer email program now. I successfully upgraded my step-dad's Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird about 6 months ago with no issues.

Office 2007 should run fine, I believe I have my Mom's laptop running Windows 10 and she is still running Office 2003 (I *think* it is 2003) with no problems. It is definitely older than the Office 2010 that I have on my computer that she complains about. (doesn't like the ribbon interface)

I'm running Windows Live Mail version: 2009 (Build 14.0.8117.0416) on Win 8.1/10 just fine. It was a file that I had put on a disk, many moons ago, but it runs good. Also, I'm running Office 2007 on Win 8.1/10 as well.

this is almost my laptop I7 6700 

16 gb ddr4 ram

GeForce gt 960

128 gb SSD mostly used 81 percent of it's life gone.

1 terabyte hard drive.

I'm running Windows 10 with no problems. It fixed the problems of windows 8. Your graphics, and memory is a little time, but should run windows 10 with no problems. For an old computer it's pretty good.

Thanks for the replies! Most appreciated.

I am running Live Mail 2012. I do have the installation file also.
I use G Mail but use windows live to access it on my desktop.
I keep my Documents, My pictures, My Videos, My Music and Favourites on a separate drive.
The only thing on C Drive is the operating system.
I also have installation files for my installed programs.

When I do install Windows 10 which will be after January I will disconnect the other drives before doing so to be on the safe side.

I'd do an install soon. Might not be free by January. On this page you can click Update and it will ask you if you want a clean install or keep your files intact. It will let you know which files are not compatible with 10 and will delete them if you continue with the Keep Files install. If you choose to do an install to keep your files you will be able to go back to 7 just incase things don't work out, but I think there is time limitation to return to 7. I believe it's 10 days.
