A Reason to Install Start10?

Wish/Suggestion

New (actually returning) OD user here who hasn't tried Start10 yet. From what I understand, there doesn't seem to be any reason to install it if you prefer the Windows 10 style menu. It's strictly for those who want to replace it with a custom or legacy style menu. There's one thing I wish Start10 or some OD utility could do that would inspire me to install it immediately:

~ The ability to assign a single custom icon to tile group folders ~

Imagine how much cleaner the Start menu below would look if I could choose a single large icon for most or all of those tile folders—especially if the icons are from a uniformly styled collection. We should also be able to choose an icon from any app or at least choose one of the apps in that folder instead of all those tiny icons that make the entire menu look cluttered. Perhaps folders with a single icon could remain distinguishable from apps by adding square brackets around the name or something. In any case, it'll be obvious once you click on it.

Busy Windows 10 Start Menu

Could features like this significantly expand interest in purchasing/using Start10? Well, I guarantee it would expand by at least 1. :star:

What you are asking is the actual reason to use Start 10.  You want those tile sections to be folders.  They are not folders.  Also the list of apps on the left are not folders.  Windows 10 puts all files in all the folders below at the same level.  If you had a folder tree that has the same file name multiple times they will all show up at the same level and it will not be obvious which file goes with what.

The Windows 8/8.1/10 system is for people that have only a few files and programs.  If you have a lot of stuff Start 10 is extremely useful.  It also gives easy access to the Windows 10 menu or you can have it the other way where it defaults to the Windows 10 way and you can easily select the Start 10 way when you have to dig deeper.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. Sorry it took so long for me to discover it among the forest of notifications (from many sources, not Stardock in particular). I see your point, but I don't really need/want my W10 tile groups to have all the attributes of folders. I simply want to tidy them up a bit cosmetically. Also, believe it or not, I actually like the W10 Start menu overall and don't want to go back to a Windows 7 style menu. I viewed all the customization screenshots and none of them appeal to me enough to replace W10 Start.

Nevertheless, you've inspired me to give Start 10 a try if it's easy to switch between the styles as you say. Aside from stability concerns, the biggest fear is losing my carefully organized W10 menu and having to rebuild it from scratch...
