I locked fences some time ago now I can't find a way to unlock them..Help!

Sorry to hear you are having issues.
You should have this option to unlock fences by right'click
on your desktop and un-check lock fences.

The right clk View menu doesn't have the lock fences option. I think this may be a windows 10 issue.
I recently had a problem with the 'new' option in the menu and I found a solution to that. This may be a similar type problem.

Sorry you had to redo your desktop , i'm guessing you might not know
about snapshot which you could restore your desktop after a Purge.
