Trading of Premium Suites - a Copyright 'issue'

I have been contacted now on a few occasions from people being asked to 'swap' their premium, purchased suites in exchange for other 'product'.

This is in violation of the artist's copyright in exactly the same way as Kazaa facilitates copyright theft through MP3 distribution, and is unacceptable.

I attempted to contact one of the people who was requesting such but the email was returned 'undeliverable' [using the Wincustomize site profile's contact email]...but, fortunately for the person concerned I managed to hunt you down so you will now escape public censure.

This thread was intended as a last resort of contact, but you have been spared.

However, bear in mind that the purchase of a product does not usually include 'distribution rights' as well, and the unauthorized distribution is a definable 'actual loss' reclaimable through the legal system.

I think one warning is politic, but future occurrence/s warrants Site access rights revision.

To me, someone who opted to buy the suite because I like it and because I know and respect the authors here, it was very disheartening to get such a request (especially within such a short time frame of the suite having been released). That was bad enough but to wake up in the morning with even more requests in my inbox... that was just a little too much.

The requests also bothered me because it seemed to me that they would have some impact on the way I choose to communicate and deal with people on this site. Requests like this seem to me to infringe on my own sense of freedom by: 1) Causing me to doubt the wisdom of expressing my pleasure and support here on the board (since now I think I should avoid doing that so as not to get these requests) 2) causing me to rethink the advisability of keeping my addy up (something that has allowed friends to contact me more than once).

It just simply isn't a good thing to do to someone any way you look at it. It disrespects the artist or developer, and it also disrespects the person you approach. (and I am not going to go into how it could effect one's own sense of self esteem)

Claiming poverty is no real excuse to me, since I am about as low as one can get as far as that goes. Ignorance, inexperience... well I am writing this so that maybe some people will stop and think a little more about what they are doing. I am fairly new to the Internet and all of these issues are even now becoming clear to me. Little by little, I am catching on. Reading the conversations regarding these issues here on this message board has taught me a lot.

Jafo was being very decent and level-headed considering he could have publicly humiliated someone and more than likely with good cause but he probably saw the stupidity in the request and gave the 'person' the benefit of the doubt.

I have to agree with GM...most 'folk' who are impoverished are not apt to have a computer or can afford an internet connection and 'warez' as well as 'trading programs on the sly' is very much like a teenager who can get by with stealing at the local grocery where granny is semi-blind and going senile and tends to often look the other way and knit a stocking cap.

Warez and file sharing won't go away any time soon but being so blatant and tackily blunt to actually email an administrator of a website for 'filez' and/or 'programz' is verging on the mentally inept.

In the end...everything will be done...nothing is sacred and just when you think you've been shocked...something else comes along that makes the last thing that freaked you out look innocuous.

Jafo...agent#23...on the case...!

When Old Crab purchases a "sweet" only a cash payment of million bucks could purbsuade him to let go. Sorry Jafo but money is money. In reality though such requests are a dishonest attempt to rip off the artist and duck responsibility for paying for intellectual rights. I've recieved these requests usually right after I've purchase a suite and have often wondered how they got the information of the purchase or if they're just trolling the account section of WC. It is annoying to say the least and a crime at worst.

Shmoopy....a correction....they weren't THAT inept as to contact me....it was others complaining about being approached by them who contacted me...

I'm with Old Crab on this one. When people ask me for a premium suite, I demand one million dollars, and after they give me the money, I do give them a copy of the suite, but to make up for that copy, I purchase another copy. Although it's still wrong, because I'm distributing something I'm not supposed to, at least I'm buying another copy to make up for the free one that I gave to the freeloader.

After purchasing my latest suite (Carbonix) was was peaved to get multiple e-mails requesting a trade with me. I politely declined the request and then blocked the e-mail address. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that even if it's not legal (which it isn't) it is at least unethical. These are suites that we purchase for the sake of supporting those who spend the hours to keep this market advancing. If you supposedly don't have the $$ for the suite, hold off on McDonald's a couple of times in the week and you'll save your arteries the build-up as well as the $$ needed to buy the suite.
Jafo, GM, & others who support this - it's nice to know that in today's world you still have a few people that know what morals are.
Two scoops for the right thing to do! :o)

ahh copyright violations... i deal with them everyday at work... working in the copy/printing biz shows you just how much people care about one another.. its absolutly incredible and so disheartening.

How about showing the e-mail addresses only to SD customers, WC subscribers and to all members above the Citizen level? Maybe add this as an option in addition to the two existing ones? It would at least take care of untrackable people. Registered users and subscribers may be less likely to use the practices described by Jafo.

Am I correct in assuming that the person was offering to swap one product for another whilst retaining an illegal copy of the original product offered, or were they looking to release ownership of the original product (including deleting any/all copies of the original product that they had)?

I'd like to second MadIce's idea about having an option to only show email addresses in a wincust profile to users that are a certain level (say anything either citizen or above or perhaps above citizen altogether). I've been wanting that feature for some time now. I long ago disabled my email address display in my profile.
