I am REALLY SCREWED NOW

start10 uodate

I was sent an update for start10 when I tried to install it I got this error:  the following file is in use and cannot be updated: C:\Users\public\documents\stardock\start10\round7\bottomleft.png.  I checked to see if any process was locking the file and it wasnt. Now what do I do?  My start10 is GONE.

I tried restarting the pc several times and still no luck

Next I tried downloading start10 from majorgeeks and when I try to install it I get this..............setup could not create the following folder. WTF?

It sounds like the file permissions on those subfolders have gotten changed by something and the Start10 installer cannot write there. If Start10 is the only Stardock app, I would delete or rename C:\users\public\documents\stardock and then reinstall.

First, I am sorry to hear you are having trouble, really.

I suspect that what you really want is Start10, a superior product in almost every way, to work over that alternative.  I will do what I can to help with that if you have the time and patience.

What I have to insist on, however, is that we watch the language and that we try to stay focused on reporting on the problem, not venting the frustration you surely have.  To be clear, I share it, the frustration, it's never pleasant for us when we read that an update is causing anyone an issue.  Again, if you have the time, we really would like to work this out for you.

While there is a file with 'round' in the name, its the 'folder' that the error is reporting.  What Nakor (a SD employee and really smart guy) is asking here:

I would delete or rename C:\users\public\documents\stardock and then reinstall.
End of Nakor's quote

Is that you do this:

https://www.screencast.com/t/goZBjFLst

In that video, I renamed:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock

to:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock_OLD

Doing so should force the Start10 installer to create a new one.  That said, it will have no impact on how you had Start10 set up should you have made any special pins or links.

After looking at your account, and seeing that Start10 is the only app you have, it would be safe to do that without affecting other Stardock apps should you have had them installed.

After, while the installer should request elevated permissions (Admin), I still want you to right click the installer and 'Run as Administrator'.

If this fails, or you do not want to make the attempt at all, I understand.  I am just try to restore your faith in the product and the people who make and support it

Let me know please.

I tried but I CANT delete that folder because it is not there yet. I downloaded start10 and halfway thru the install I get the message saying this: setup can not create the following folder. public documents id empty. YES I REALLY do want start10 but I cant get off first base, what now?

This is my version.......microsoft windows 10 home 10.0.17134 build 17134

There has to be a way to fix this I tried doing system restore to go back to when it did work, cant get off first base there either, system restore failed, I shut off defender and made sure services were running, it still failed so I tried booting into safe mode and of course I couldnt find any restore points because they all disapperared, just my luck

I would like to suggest to check your Windows system files using SFC /scannow command. You can try the steps listed here : https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-sfc-scannow-to-repair-windows-system-files-2626161

Thank you,
