a problem with windows 10 1803 update... creation of a app commands ... share ... print ... settings menu that doesn't function.

applicationframehost.exe .mui file

Since windows update 1803, on my two computers a sub menu appears randomly.
The text for that menu is located in the system32 folder in a temporary file created by applicationframehost.exe

I believe that file is named applicationframe.exe.mui  It contains the text of the small menu that randomly appears in the left top corner
of the desktop or a running program.  The items print and share do nothing... the settings brings up a blue dialog box on the left side of the screen that is entitled SETTINGS.  This box is empty.

This behavior started when 1803 was installed.  The little sub menu disappears when I end task on windowsframehost.exe process.  Due to the random nature of its appearance, I am suspicious that fences or start 10 is sending out the system call.  The MS Answer desk has not
seen this problem and suggested that the applicationframehost is tightly tied to the menuing process.

Anyone have any thoughts or that experience?  as seen below...

Hello,
I have forwarded your report to the Stardock support team for their review and recommendations. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks.

I terminated fences and start10 but the menu appeared.  So it seems that they are not the culprit.

However, the problem appears while the machine is idle.  I have disabled all tsrs and will add them back.

If the problem is stardock related, I am sure it will crop up on members machines.  It has on my two unrelated

machines.  Thx.

Immediately following the Win 10 1803 update all was fine. However, a few days after update all of a sudden after starting my computer all of the icons for most used applications have disappeared. I went back in and used several aps to see if they would add back to the list but so far that has not happened and my list remains blank. Any ideas?

Missing Menu Items Since 1803 update

Why not try uninstalling start 10 and then reinstall?  I suspect that start10 keeps track of the icons in history list. I'm pretty certain there is a setting in start 10 which determines how many items appears on the history menu.  It may be set to 0.

Sorry kfss but as the picture I included shows, I have left space for 25 icons on the menu and they have all disappeared and as I use an application again they are not added to the list as also shown in the picture. They were all there when I shut down the computer and all disappeared when I started it up again the next day. I may have to uninstall and reinstall but I hate to do that because I have manually reorganized and renamed folders extensively and have them as I want them not as windows puts them. I have used this software for years and there is a little quirk that comes up after most system updates that usually work themselves out. If this one doesn't and stardock cant figure it out, I will uninstall and reinstall at that time. ALL other functions are working except for this one. Thanks!

Hello basj. Although that suggestion did not work, one of the other articles in that thread had the correct info and all of my info is now working and adding icons back to my list. Thank you so much for your help, you ROCK!! \o/

Great, thanks for reporting back.

I am having this exact same issue.  While I do own Stardock products, I have none of them installed.  I do have ClassicShell and ActualTools Actual Window Manager installed.  Today I added an exclusion in AWM for this EXE (applicationframehost.exe) to see if this continues.

No more time then it took me to disable and reply to this, and the pop-up menu is back.  =(

I believe that I have the answer and it has nothing to do with the menu system....
It was suggested by Microsoft that the menu was interfering... but this is not true!
Go into windows settings and select "privacy" and then "background apps."
I turned this off and unchecked on the apps.  I don't know if the last step is necessary,
but I don't use apps.

The menu that appears is function less.  I'll report this to Microsoft and try to determine
which app is making the system call.  But this is beyond the scope of this forum.  Probably best
to only check apps that you use.

The solution I posted, reply 12 is the correct solution.  The "helper menus" are provided for Microsoft Apps in particular and is created by a system .dll

At the time, I was trying to see if fences or start 10 might be provoking the empty menu. But it has only to do with Microsoft's new way to share app info.

They are doing away with MAPI in lieu of a new form of app sharing.  Its name alludes me..  Its interesting to note that Microsoft's new scheme only shares to Microsoft Apps i.e. Mail.  They don't seem to be a team player.

So play around with the workaround in reply 12.  That should do it if empty menus are appearing in the top corner of your desktop.
