Food as a resource

I know it has been mentioned before.

To help deter war if one gets some food from another civilization/country they are less likely to go  to war with them.

I am tentatively in favor of the idea of using food as a valuable trade item.

I still can't come to terms with the fact that, with all expansions including Crusades, Food has nothing to do with Population growth or population in any other way, the only significant influence seems to be the availability of yet another City to increase the Population Cap by 3 and keeping everyone happy.

Anyway we'll see what tomorrow brings.
