Object Dock question

Can anyone tell me how to get Object Dock to stop opening new icons on the dock whenever you open a program? If the program is actually on the dock then fine but if there is no icon for quick access, how do you stop an icon from automatically opening on the dock until you close the program? This is quite anoying if there isn't enough room on the dock.
