Internet myth?

OK, let's get this out of the way. What follows is not Anti-US etc etc, it is just plain funny in my eyes!

This was sent to me. Can anyone validate if it actually happened or is just one of those false things that gets around ...

To set the scene....experts with newscaster on CNN, 24th March.

In the studio are 3 US experts including a former 2-star general from delta force, 1 ex SAS (British) and the network's anchor.

They are showing footage of Iraqis giving themselves up......

Anchor: We have no verification as of yet if they are British or American troops taking these POW's

US 1: Only Americans wear boots like that, they're American

US 2: I agree, and they appear to have American camouflage jackets.

US 3 (delta force bloke): I'm not so sure, there's not enough up-close detail to tell 100%, we'd need some close images to tell make of boots and jackets and maybe the shape of their kevlar headgear.

Ex SAS man: Call yourselves experts? Since when did US forces use an SA80 as a standard issue rifle? Their DPM's can be bought as can boots so you're chasing rainbows if you want to identify them from their clothes.

Anchor: I think you're right.

Ex SAS man: Course I'm bloody right. Any one with half a brain and basic military training worth their salt should be able to identify a British soldier by his rifle. Not to mention the fact they're covering all points properly, not shouting "woo yeah" randomly, and haven't raised a flag in direct contravention with orders.

At this point 1 of the Americans walks off stage tearing his mic off, and the anchor says "I think we can safely say the soldiers on your screen are British. Now for these messages".

Earlier in the war there was a live broadcast of a huge column of tanks rolling into Umm Qasr which were identified by the 'expert' as American M1 Abrams. I'm not a military expert but even I could see they were Challenger IIs - the small union flag on the back was a dead give-away!

I think I heard brief mention of that yesterday too, but I didn't see it myself. Very funny indeed.

Fuzzy, that doesn't mean anything, you know. It seems that some pilots can't recognise the Union Jack on a tank. :/

Speaking of SAS soldiers: Last year an ex-SAS guy was drunk in the bar of the casino where I work. He managed to upset members of the local Triads that frequent our casino and was promptly attacked by around 14 chinese guys. It was a vicious attack, they wrecked the place, they hit him with everything in the bar... bottles, chairs, large copper glass drainers etc, but to his credit, the guy never went down once! stayed on his feet the whole time until the security broke it up. Impressive considering he was drunk too! When asked if he would like to get the police involved, he just said "No thanks, we will deal with this our own way". Scary!

Don't mess with the SAS!

One golden rule: if someone tells you they are in the SAS don't believe them, they are not

um, does this mean that if someone says they are not in the SAS then they are?

There's only two ways to back out of SAS training.....serious injury or throwing in the towel....the latter prevents any future re-application, as bottling out is NOT an option.
One SAS [Aussie] in training finally couldn't hack-it any longer so stuck his arm in between two branches and simply snapped it....got out with a medical injury, which meant he could still re-apply.
Even the ones that 'don't' make it are pretty bloody tough....

Needless to say the Aussie SAS in Iraq are probably having lots of fun....well and truly in their 'element'.....but I heard that the English had to be extracted after biting off a little TOO much....

Yeah, it's going to take them days of searching before someone tells them Iraq has no dingos

my dad would have made a good "sassy" (eyesight, anyway). he would infuriate us in the middle of watching "Combat" by bellowing out "$#@^%!! That battle took place in '42, and that German in the corner is shooting a '43 vintage Mauser! What kind of idiots do they take us to be ??" ( He had 20-10 vision in both eyes, and complained about many things that most of us can't even see.)

Yes, indeed, it's very frustrating to watch a movie about something that you're a specialist of. I worked 8 years in a hospital, and I can tell you that reality is nothnig like what they show you.
I have never seen any movie with a realistic resuscitation, for example. I can't tell you how many movies I went: &&*??% idiots! Don't they do research before they start shooting?

i guess i do it too. i watched a movie where the main group of people were supposed to be Filipino guerillas fighting the Japanese in WWII. the soldiers were speaking Thai in all of the non-english communication sequences! if you need Tagalog, hey, then any ol' asian language will do, right? and no one would ever notice a chinese actor in the role of a japanese general, right? i think hollywood would be amazed if they knew how much we actually see.

Unfortunately I've heard that we (Canada) does have troops in Iraq. Apparently any tropps that were already affiliated with US, or British units were allowed to stay with those units when they shipped out.

I don't know if this story is true, but I desperately hope that it is. It's Beautiful!

Frugus, there are some 20 Canadian soldiers fighting with the British uniform. I understand that they were part of some sort of an exchange program. In which case, they are considered British troops, not Canadians troops.
