desktopx error - cant find msvcr70.dll

Desktopzx was working fine.... ontill today. Now I am getting an error message that says it can not find this file. I tried uninstalling, reboot, reinstall, reboot, and get the same message. It says that reinstaling may fix this problem, but it does not.

Is this file a ms file or a stardock file? The only other thing i have recently installed and then uninstalled was Kazaa.

Any ideas?

From micrsoft:

The shared C Runtime (CRT) DLL has been distributed by Microsoft in the past as a shared system component. This may cause problems when you run applications that are linked to a different version of the CRT on computers that do not have the correct versions of the CRT DLL installed. This is commonly referred to as the "DLL Conflict" problem.

To address this issue, the Msvcr70.dll is no longer considered a system file, therefore, distribute Msvcr70.dll with any application that relies on it. Because it is no longer a system component, install it in your applications Program Files directory with other application-specific code. This prevents your application from using other versions of the CRT library that may be installed on the system paths.

If reistalling the app does not work.... what else?

Is that file actually in the DesktopX folder? If it's not do a search on your hard disk for it. Then if you find it copy it to the DesktopX folder. If it's not anywhere I should email [email protected]

Download it and put it inn your system32 folder
these are scanned and tested to ensure they are working
and the real deal, so no fears...

or as pipowell said, put it in your DTX dir/folder...

system32 is directly in the search path also... But DTX might expect it to be in it;s folder???

thanks for the help guys.

It is not any where on my harddrive. I reinstalled component manager, and desktopx, and neither of these replaced the dll. If this file is not included in windows then it must have originally come with desktopx. Can understand machine gremlins swiping it, but cant understand the reinsatll not replacing it.

It would be nice to find the one supplied by stardock with the apps.

msvcr70.dll Is also used in Object Dock. Copy it from the Object Dock folder to the DX folder and you're good to go!! This has worked for me and others. Good luck!!!

I had the same error message and finally decided to uninstall DX. But when I went to do that I noticed it had a repair option. So I used that and restored all original files for that version of DX (the last nonbeta release) since evidently there were newer versions in there. To my surprise it worked. Go figure. Don't know that it would be any help to anyone else but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

I'm so happy that I found this thread. I, too, have the same problem. I am not in any way, shape or form an intelligent person when it comes to "repairing" something that is missing from my computer, especially a .dll. My DX was working great when suddenly the same problem arose...Msvcr70.dll was not found. I haven't known what to do, so I just left it and tried to avoid using it. I was just about to close IE and remove DX from my computer when I happened to think about checking the messageboard. I will try the DX reapair option first, it seems easy enough, even for me! I'm grateful for all the invaluable advice/information that this site holds. It is truly amazing. What I paid for Object Desktop is a mere pittance when you realize all the windows that it opens (not an intended pun) in regards to enjoyment, info., learning, etc. that is available, virtually for free. At winCustomize, I have never seen so many helpful people-especially with the intelligence & talent that this bunch has. I also purchased ToonXP and although I enjoy using it, it's got nothing over the "free" suites and files that I have downloaded from winCustomize. EVERYTHING looks professional, EVERYTHING shows countless hours of difficult work and because the artists/authors share this with the public cost-free (for personal home use),it's just the icing on the cake! Thanks to all who give adivice and share computer knowledge...you are kind of hidden in the shadows of the message boards but you are so greatly appreciated!

Mary Jo, my DX problem happened after installing Toon XP. And the repair worked for me, FWIW. It just reinstalls DX on top of itself. What I did do is when it asked if you want to keep the newer versions of DX files, I said no. Thus restoring DX to the original installed version. After that DX worked and so did the Toon XP DX theme. That seemed counter intuitive to me, but it worked.

But as I said it was the last formal release version of DX from last fall. Dunno about the later beta versions and what would help there. Perhaps it would be better to run the latest beta DX, but I haven't tried it yet. Hope you get yours working too.
