Linux version of Windows (Lindows)

Does LiteStep work on linux platforms? Would it work on Lindows?

Lindows dropped its Windows emulation.

But Wine still exists standalone, like it existed before Lindows. Wine can run Windows applications. To do this, a lot of Windows DLLs and other livraries have been "ported" to Linux. Somebody even "ported" DirectX. Paths (C:\Windows; C:\Program FIles; etc.) have to be remapped to work in your Linux directory structure, etc.
Anyway, all this to say that I don't know.
Maybe. But the desktop on Linux is very different from a desktop in Windows, that's the part that makes me wonder.
I have Wine installed, but I haven't finished RTFM yet, so I haven't configured anything yet. Maybe I'll give it a try some time.

first: forget Lindows, there are much better distributions that are available for free.
LiteStep on Linux? sounds tempting, but i highly doubt it would work. you might be able to put simpler things as lsnotes or rainmation on your desktop using WINE, but stuff like the desktop, tasks, recycle bin or system tray and most likely metering won´t work.
better have a look into Enlightenment. it does not only skin the windows, but is also capable to build full desktop environments.
a friend of mine (pixelmasochist aka babyhead) has started porting this: http://www.deskmod.com/core.mod?state=view&skin_id=3367 to Enlightenment and it´s about 90% accurate.

"look into Enlightenment. it does not only skin the windows,"

What Moshi forgets to mention however is that it's a *nix Window manager's job to handle window appearance. ^_^

"does KDE still eat up resources like a hog?"

It has never done that for me! I imagine the newest uses a bit more resources though - with the additional eye-candy, but I've never found it a resource hog. It's no blackbox, but at least it's no Gnome either!

/me still shudders at the mere mention of Enlightenment though. I still have e16 nightmares.

Native windows emulation in lindows is indeed still there... too avoid as much of Microsofts ire as possible they agreed they would stop pushing lindows as a direct alternative to Windows so they down play the compatibility... but from the very begining it has been Wine with some extra customization... Lindows is a good alternative for those who wish to try linux but do not have the knowlegde to get started right away... they have made installing programs quite painless but yes it comes at the cost of a subscription.

I think it was KDE 2? that I had the resource problems with, it very well could have been a driver issue though. PCI S3 video card could have been the one doing the dirty deed?

I did always like the layout and look/feel of KDE, Gnome was ok, but got hooked on Enlightenment at a lan party and never switched after.

Have to check out the new KDE, also there is the "ksysv" now to check things out and see where you can tweak

ok

I don't think I have ever seen a computer running Linux. How do you iuse it? Is it all code? I thought LiteStep would work because it is so programable and a shell replacement.

So what IS the inteface on a Linux computer?

ever seen a SCO/Unix or any Unix box for that matter?

with a window-manager loaded you've got a gui and you can theme it
without, then you have a prompt and or ascii menus that run scripts and such.

bit more evolved than that now I guess, but boils back down to it still...

some links up thread you could go take a look around if curious about it...

wow, thanks IPlural.

I have been noticing the rise of Linux (mostly for servers) and I am starting to hear allot of noice about desktop apps. I will do some reseach on the subject. It would be nice if you could "skin" Linux.

Now all I ned to find out is what is the difference between Linux and Unix.

thanks everyone for your help on this and the links.

"So what IS the inteface on a Linux computer? "

Well, technically the interface on a Linux system is your wonderful little textual console - but really, next to nobody uses that anymore, thanks to the joys of X Windows.

There's no standard interface to *nix though, which is both one of its strengths /and/ a huge failing of it. There are a multitude of different window managers out there for users to take advantage of.

anybody got a screen shot of thier Linux desktop? so far I haven't found any on line... but I only been looking for 10 minutes soooo... Maybe I should keep looking. Google made me lazy, now I do not remember how to do a real search bcause it is so easy on Google.

i wanted to do distance training for Linux certification... but I REALLY don't like on line classes.

joetheblow: it's difficult to say what Linux looks like cause it can look so different depending on which distribution you use with which desktop manager and which themes you use on it.

For example, have a look at this demo of Red Hat Linux 8.0 (the one I have) http://www.redhat.com/software/linux/flash/redhat6_5.html .
Then browse over to the KDE web site (a desktop manager) and look at people's screenshots: http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=screenshot, you could also peek at the world of Gnome (another desktop manager and check a few screenshots there http://art.gnome.org/screenshot_list.php?ARTSESSID=f056938f3c226895a3440b173ecd2481 .

Also, remember Carlitus? Here's one of his screenshots, using KDE: http://www.deviantart.com/view/1255847

Welcome to the Enlightenment Project!

Enlightenment is a completely themeable, highly configurable Window Manager for the X Window System, traditionally used in Unix environments.

You want a screenshot of my linux desktop? Just look at my desktop picture on here. Minus 2 plugins (the bottom system bar, and the multiamp plugin on the left,) my desktop in Linux looks identical to my desktop in Windows (which is what the screenshot's of.)

(Well, I don't have CursorXP or Windowblinds in Linux/Blackbox either - but you don't need ém. ^_^)

Also Freshmeat.net is a good place to take a look at the possibilities

/me notices the Xymox and VNV Nation in IPlural's screenshot. Sweet.

/me forgets that the rest of the theme is even there - it's all priorities. ^_^

thanks. I thought KDE and Gnome was another operating system.

I've a new toy to learn now though ODnet

well actually ODnet, WinStep Full, Hoverdesk and Aston... wife went buggy, but I want to do a skin\theme set across them all when I finally start putting slices together...

I let my fingers do the talking with Discover and Visa

ODNet really intrests me though, because of the possibilities it seems to open up....

Wow - more and more off topic - but Hoverdesk is -fun-. I don't use it as much, since I started using the Windows version of blackbox - but I still love it.
actually, I do like it and it was the first one I purchased, but at the same time I was looking at ODNet and had decided on SD. It was Hoverdesk itself that prompted me to buy both, also Thibaud(spelling) and Dan, the programing work and the art put into it that was the clincher

I've been wondering quietly if they have plans for a future version that would skin windows also (more please? HD?).

After that it just kind of snowballed

I did find out that Aston is way fast... but, if you load WB over it, nope don't like it one bit

Doesn't hurt, had the funds and what little it gave to them it was something at least, that might make a really really small ding in the funds lost to freaking pirates eating up their efforts...

anyway... back to topic
