Widgets and gadgets don't work?

Hi, since we have windows 7 and 8 now, do the old widgets and gadgets like clocks and weather and media players not work at all anymore? None of the gadgets or widgets I made function on windows 7. Is there a way to get them to work again?

thanks for your help.

Gadgets work fine for me on 8.1 and 10.

The older weather gadgets don't work. Newer ones do.

I made alot of widgets in the past when I was on windows xp. But now on windows 7 and 8, none of the widgets or even the gadgets work. So I wanted to know if there is a way to get them back working again. Would buying the DesktopX 4 help? I tried widgets done by others and none work. Thanks for any help. Someone replied that theirs work fine on win8 so there has to be a way for mine to work. What I mean by they don't work, is just that none of them open, I just get an error message that the program stopped working, please close or look for solution online.

ALL of my widgets work. If mine don't work for you, there is something wrong on your system. Sorry.   ;)

Oh, and DX4 isn't available. DX has been retired.   X|

3.5 was totally borked. The last good working version was 3.96 beta which was labeled as DX 4. If you were an ODNT subscriber back then, you should has access to it. If not, you are out of luck as DX has been dropped by Stardock.

Wizard is correct, except that I don't see the beta DX4 (3.96) in my downloads, so I doubt you will either.

I stand corrected, the beta is no longer listed in my downloads either.

Generic suggestion - Try deleting all the files in the cache directories.  It does work wonders sometimes.

C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Stardock\DesktopX

Doubird Desktopx 3.5 is the last working version I believe. Also you still can download 3.5 outside of Stardock which might solve your problem as I think you might have a bad version of Desktopx. Plus if your version is working try changing the compatibility of the gadget or widget to run in Win 7. You mentioned you made them in XP so they might be trying to start in XP so try changing the mode to Win 7. This I know for sure if you have Win 10 and a gadget or widget doesn't work change the compatibility to Win 7 and I will work with no problem. If that still does not work then I agree there is something wrong with your OS

For me, DesktopX is alive and well on Windows 10 as well.

Without a doubt, the DX 3.5 (Pro) that is in My Downloads at the Stardock Store DOES NOT WORK. It hasn't in a few years. (Nothing scripted will run.)

I use the DesktopX 4 Pro beta (3.96).  Works fine, even on Windows 10. So far, all gadgets and widgets I have tried also work on Windows 10.

I agree with RedneckDude as my DX which I bought though many years ago and it works just fine and all gadgets and widgets from long ago like year 2000 still work with no problem. I have Win 7 and Win 10 and both OS's do not have any problem running DX and widgets and gadgets that are scripted. I even went as far as downloading from a third party the trial version of DX just as an experiment and that to works in both OS's.

Start in  Compatibility mode ? :|

Ok, Eureka, I got them to work with the compatibility thing. Thanks.

2 things aren't quite right. First for the weather gadgets, I got them to open but I can't seem to change the weather location. I tried zip code, city name and weather id code. Anyone had this problem and know how to fix it?

Second, I get them to open, but if I copy them into a different folder, they don't open anymore, I have to redo the compatibility thing. Any help is appreciated.

Firstly, I run mine without having to use compatibility mode, just saying.

Secondly, a lot of the older weather gadgets don't work anymore due to the weather feeds being changed.

I rarely use any weather gadgets other than my own, so I can't speak for the rest.

Just a suggestion. Try rainmeter and or XWidget. There's a lot there. I've been weaning off of DX but it still works for me as well.  Like RD says my own weather widgets work.

cool that yours work without the compatibility trick. My weather gadgets work but they stay at the location I had put in when I made them. They also open at a friends computer but the same location is stuck there, can't change them. Thought there was a way to fix this, I'll keep searching. At least all the other gadgets work.
