Default 6 Ratings

Default 6 Ratings

I have read in the past that if a skin is not actually rated. It receives a 6 rating...
Is this so?
and if so, is it possible to just leave the skin as unrated instead of the default 6. Or would that mess with the way downloads are controlled? I know that unregistered users can only download an 8 or higher.
Although some users don't care about the ratings and say they are over rated... Many users, use these ratings to help them find skins that are perceived as a notch above. what do you think?

I think it fixes the thumnails. Not sure though. Just a guess.

I believe that when you hit the "Fix Thumbnails" button it sends an e-mail to T-Man that tells him there is a problem with the sizing of the thumbnail image of your preview.
T-Man has to check every instance of the button being pressed and if he finds there is nothing wrong with your thumbnail you will most likely receive the honorific "Exiled" in front of your user name.

Of course, none of the above may be true.............but do you want to risk the wrath of a very busy site coder?

Iben...it really won't bite...

I like getting on the chat boxes at sites like Skinbase, press the button that says 'chat' and post "what does this button do?"
Strangely, no-one ever answered...

Reality Check!

Every skin I have uploaded has received a 6 rating with exception to my last one which got an 8 rating. (now down to 5 ) I know the moderation has changed recently because the only skin that got a rating other than 6 was accompanied by and email which I never got before.

My status is not a journeyman so auto 6 doesn't apply but might be the name of my next skin, Auto 6.

I emailed a moderator who would remain nameless except BoXXi came forward. I asked why I got a 6 rating all the time and was told that the moderators are too busy to look at every skin and the server gives the rating. THe email went on to say only exceptional skins get an actual scrutiny. There was no mistake in understanding what the email said.

I am unfamiliar with the moderation tools so I can't comment on how the auto thingy works. I do know that 6 was getting used way too much and I had to find out why and that was the answer I got.

Now if that is not the correct answer this week, what is the answer to every skin getting a 6 rating.

I know my skins have gotten better from the first one (6 rating) to the second to last one (6 rating) so the answer could not be they are in actuality all mediocre skins.

The funny thing is I really don't care about ratings of skins. What troubles me and is a pet peeve of mine is fairness. I am not the only one that is trouble by what they see when they upload a piece of work so there is a wrinkle in the ratings system that needs to be ironed out. Just think, why an auto 6 and not an auto 5. That in itself tells oodles about the protocol of the rating system.

Delicious....here is your 'ratings' breakdown....without names, of course, although the FIRST one on each line is the admin one you maintain is a '6'.
Sorry to have to correct you, but you drag up the topic at every opportunity.
These are in 'order' as displayed...top to bottom.
Note the 'clear repetition' of an Admin's '6'...

5 10 2 5 1
8 8 6 10 9 5 10
7 10 8 4
6 8 10
5 7 10
7 3 8 10 5
6 7
5
6 6 6 7
9 10 10 7
6
6 10
4 10 9 6 8
8 10 4
10 10 6 5
9 10 5
7
8 8
7

Clearly there is a wide range of 'ratings' based on individual preferences/criteria. That's expected...and happens in gymnastics at the Olympics...[why the Ruskie judge rates the Ruskie higher]...with a larger 'selection' of ratings they tend to average out at a mean that reflects public perception of the work itself.
Now try averages compared with the Admin rating and see whether the latter is biased or opinionated beyond the public opinion.
You work it out.....I couldn't be fussed...but I'm betting there's a reasonable correlation...

IMHO....I've noticed that since I try to read as many post's or comments that I can (no one could read them all) at any rate here is my question or statement: It is interesting to note that as people become more adapt at creating and submitting they become more and more "touchy" (for lack of a better word). I tend to think that maybe it is in the "Nature" of an "Artist" to be somewhat tempermental. Either that or perhaps that it is true that "Familarity breeds contempt"
Please forgive my spelling because it is not my strongest suit. I'm just curious if anyone else cares to comment along these lines?

HuronJoe...there's a little bit of 'tedium of repetition' when people who have been involved for a long time find they are re-hashing the same old explanations to all-comers as they arrive.
That, and the issue of 'ego' versus 'talent' and the feeling that any criticism/rejection, no matter how moderate is seen as a personal attack on their man-hood [or female equivalent].
'Familiarity' is not the same as 'friendship'.
A friend can tell you that you are an asshole and you 'may' even agree. A familiar acquaintance calls you a little 'odd' and you'll jump down their throat...

Thanks for the reply Jafo, you of course said what I was trying to say, but much better. Also looking at all the things you must have to review must take a LOT of patience. At least all I have to do is read the reactions to moderators input (or output?)

I would like to comment HuronJoe,
Imagine working at a job for 6 years and never getting a raise. While at this job you notice co workers brown noseing the boss and get raises left and right that do the exact same work you do and sometimes inferior work.

Would you slip a little vaseline on your nose to stick up the bosses butt, sit back and say such is life, or would you voice your concerns? Leaving is not an option because there is no where to go to.

Delicious...WILL YOU READ POST #32?

I'm famous for my patience...but even mine gets 'thin'....just be fair for once....

Forgot to comment on my ratings. I don't understand how this is broken down.
5 10 2 5 1
I am assuming that now I should have a skin rating of 1 in the library. Is that right? I don't see all those numbers. All I see is the current and there is no 1 rating.
/me puts a force field around the exile button so Jafo don't push it.
add all the numbers in each row and divide by how many numbers there are...you'll get the average which is what you see on your skin.
In each row, the FIRST number is what was given to it by the admins....the ones after it are by the public.
FYI, all those '10s' were by four people, and 3 of them only each gave one....means your numbers appear to be 'unnaturally inflated', if anything....
Sally...you won't get exiled for 'arguing a case', but unfair suggestions that the admins respond to lubricated noses is a 'bit much'.
If nothing else, those admin's numbers should show a lack of 'bias'...the lowest was a '4' on one skin and the highest a '10'.
My only 'error' on that list of numbers is I think I missed one skin, and you have 20, but I only listed 19.
Dunno which one I missed, and don't care, either.
What I CAN guarantee is that the ones posted are correct...
The lubrication was not directed to the admins.
BTW that was a true story about my last job.
But back to this..
5 10 2 5 1
Do I understand that 5 ppl rated this skin?
If that is correct then doesn't it seem my point about the bias rating is evident by the 10 and the 1 rating.

Sigh. I understand you've put a lot of effort into your work and are concerned about how it is viewed. This comes up over and over again - as Jafo said, the topic gets a tad tiresome.

Now that I've offended you completely (but unintentionally), I should point out that the only people that seem to be concerned about ratings is the artist, at least in my opinion and from what I've seen. If I like it, I use it. If not, I don't. Not liking a work doesn't mean I think badly of it, just that it doesn't suit my taste.

Try to get past your concern about ratings. They really are largely meaningless and should in no way be taken as a personal attack. Even less be concerned about other's ratings. Why care?

Sally, ratings are personal opinions, a 10 to you, may be a 4 to me, and a 1 to the next person.
Delicious, you are unfortunately right. Some people are biased when they rate. Some people give high ratings to their friends and low ratings to people they don't like.
The example you stated above is just the perfect example of that. Note that we, admins, have access to information telling us who rated what, and the person who rated the above skin 10 also went about and rated almost ALL your other skins alos with a 10. That, to me, is obvious bias, as you so well said yourself. Seems you got a fan. Other than that 10, above, the other ratings are rather consistant (5, 2, 5, 1).
OK, I went and dug a bit further. That fan of yours rated 10 everything you have submitted since November 2002. He hasn't rated anything before that, but has rated every single thing of yours since, and gave it a 10.

In the event anyone sees the ratings Jafo posted and are scratching their head thinking this bottle blonde doesn't know what she is talking about, Let me share a behind the Sally mind set.

When I upload a skin and it gets a 6 rating and I think that is not satisfactory; I delete the skin and re upload it under a new name. Trust me all my skins were a 6 at first.
Please don't delete your skins and reupload them to try to improve your rating. That's a bad idea for several reasons.

I can only speak for myself but when I post a skin, the rating is whatever I feel the skin deserves. I never put an automatic rating to save time, that's silly. After a skin is on the site for a while the rating will change as people leave ratings on it. If you ever feel that a low rating is undeserved or done for an ulterior motive, contact an admin (our names and email addresses are all in the "about" page).
So what's wrong with a rating of 6?
It's a perfectly fine and average rating and other users eventually increase it or lower it depending on what they think the skin merits.
Besides, Delicious, to be perfectly honest with you, I looked at all your skins and in my opinion they pretty much all call for an average rating.
They way I see it, 6 is the middle of the road. Neither bad nor great. It's OK. 2 or 3 is totaly mediocre; 4 or 5 is bad; 6 is OK; 7 or 8 is great. 9 or 10 is exceptionnal.
