What happened to Carlitus and his work?

Hi there,

does anybody know what happened to Carlitus? His work seems to be gone from every category he ever posted in

Carlitus had philosophical differences with Wincustomize and elected to remove his work.

Same here zman...

do foood and him work together on things?
Just wondering some of the icons really fit together like a pair
of leather gloves. Not means infringment, but the style and quality.

Anyway,,,

Doors do work both direction

Carlitus is a very cool person and a great artist!

I am very sorry to hear about those "philosophical differences with Wincustomize".

The good news is, he hasn't left the community totally - and at least he's out there still doing good stuff!

His new KDE icons are /amazing/.

/me, always the optimist.

oops - that's right /m.e. doesn't like punctuation. ^_^

it was about the pay concept of this site. there are quite a few excellent skinners that don´t submit here for exactly this reason.

go out a little more. else you´ll miss plenty of awesome stuff.

TIP: here´s one of the very best CursorXP schemes. http://www.deskmod.com/?show=showskin&skin_id=25385 (not available here)

Oooh, yes. Gotta agree there. Have those cursors and love them. They don't go with my current desktop at all - but I don't care.

What pay aspects?

the pay aspect are that of the subcription and such...

That is too bad. I wasn't aware of it.

But it actually does harm to his cause. If people who feel that subscriptions and such are a bad thing remove their free contributions, it makes non-free suites, subscriptions, etc. that much more enticing.

yes, for the people that come here only you are right. they might indeed think that they get quality work for money only ...

but on the other hand i am pretty sure that Carlitus´ icons were one of many reasons for quite a few people to come here and maybe even purchase IconPackager. without the skins/icons the apps would not be worth much.

Moshi: I totally agree. But that works really until you reach critical mass.

A given product or service only needs a certain level of support before it reaches there.

In some ways, a skinnable app is like a console game system. Where each skin/theme is like a game. As long as the console has an acceptable level of variety and quantity and quality it reaches that critical mass. Hence, a Playstation 2 or Gamecube don't need 10,000 games. They really only need a couple dozen. The same holds true on a skinnable app.

The assumption skin sites make, like this one, is that artists want to share their work with others. That they have created something for themselves that they want allow others to use. One can then assume that are interested in spreading that out as far as they can. That is WInCustomize's "critical mass". An icon package or theme or skin here will get distributed to more people than any other site anywhere.

Personally, I really hate seeing politics affecting ones choice of distribution sources. I've been called vile names on Customize.org by its admins but I still have my work there. That's because once something has reached critical mass, not supporting it doesn't harm that product in any measurable way. And when removing support is done by someone who has immense talent, all it does is move things towards a more commercial angle.

To illustrate that, let me flip things around: Would someone selling premium icon suites not be tempted to try to encourage top icon authors who distribute high quality packages for free to remove their work? The absence of Carlitus's Noia greatly enhances the value of the Orion Icon suites since the average user goes "Aha, see, you just can't find free icons of Orion's quality." In essence, removing Noia and other free high quality icon suites and DesktopX themes has the opposite affect than what Carlitus intended - it has moved theming more towards commercialism because people want high quality themes and icons, and $8 isn't a barrier to entry. They'll choose free if they can but if not, they'll purchase it.

It is my understanding that Carlitus moved to the Linux platform anyway. Not sure he still does Windows icons and skins.

Also, if I remember correctly, it wasn't so much the subscriptions he didn't agree with, but the selling of premium suites. He made a post or two about the fact that he didn't agree with selling skins and icons. Then he left.
The fact he is now in the Linux community is a good proof that he sticks to his own philosophy about free and open source. Kudos to him for that.

Frogboy: you are right. sooner or later the whole thing will split into the unaware masses and people that know where the goodies are. some kind of elitism maybe ...

sorry to abuse you as an excellent example Paxx:

of course Carlitus still does icons and skins for the windows platform. actually he just started skinning (DesktopX zoomers are rather icons than skins) and he does some sweet skins. check it out (don´t be afraid, Deskmod has no popup ads and is free):

http://www.deskmod.com/?show=showskin&skin_id=23699

he also promised an msstyle (not WindowBlinds), which i am looking forward to.

Of course, bear in mind, Deskmod also benefits from the fact that one of its servers is owned by Stardock.

I do admire that Carlitus is tryign to stay true to his principles. I just tend value results over intentions.

I wondered about Carlitus and his work. I had searched for his work and couldn't find it and thought it was a problem with the Wincustomize libraries. He really did some top notch stuff. Seems like a really nice guy, too.

Carlitus is one of the best around. His talent is amazing and his creativity too. Nuvem is brilliant, saw strange dogs on deviantart. There are so many great works around on other sites, wincusto is not the creme de la creme. The artists that are 'watched' are.

Lecrayon....I'm glad you've noticed Nuvem. In the 'digital art' world he's in a class of his own....creativity AND competence....a rare combination...

I agree. Carlitus is a good guy who is really talented.

I've been talking to him via email. He really doesn't care for the concept of premium suites and the general zealotry that occurs on WinCustomize by the pro/con forces. Which is pretty understandable.

I miss Carlitus' work. but I'm glad he's still around. I worried something happened to him or his internet connection.

Indeed. WinCustomize isn't the whole world. Whether Carlitus creates stuff for IconPackager or Linux or MacOS, he is still demonstrating the power of sharing with others.

I just wish he hadn't removed his work. There were 11 pages of it and let me speak a bit here on the whole premium skins thing:

I am neutral on the issue. I have no objection to premium skins (obviously). But at the same time, I think premium skins exist and are so successful precisely because they fill a void left by "free" artists.

By removing his work (and believe me, there is no site that has all his stuff up on it) he actually helps make the case FOR premium suites.

Someone earlier suggested that his Noia icons may have sold copies of IconPackager. I won't argue that since it's impossible to say. But I will give my opinion that the lack of his Noia icons has probably not affected IconPackager / Object Desktop sales at all. On the other hand, their absence has probably sold a significant number of Orion icon suites.

Premium suites create a supply to satisfy an existing demand. In themselves they cannot create a demand. High quality free skins, themes, icons, etc. lower the demand for premium suites.

Doesn't the GPL, under which Carlitus submits his work, allow others to submit that work as long as the license is intact?
