Iv used every version of windows since 3.1, and every one of them crashed/froze from time to time. (actually more often than I care to remember.) This has not happend (NOT ONCE!) since I installed WinXP. I think it's extremly stable and quite attractive with its fresh clean look. and oh ya...can't forget that it very nicely handles windowblins and all the other OD products. Win XP has my vote.

Please try not to use all the special characters in the thread titles. Plain text works just fine

the best was General Automation's CONTROL-IV OS. i owe my phenomenal patience and incredible perseverance to it. "What doesn't kill you..."

NT has bluescreened me once in 5.5 years. other win variants have done slightly worse.

Lindows is joke... ... if you want lindows check out Xandros... that's what i've been looking at... looks like a lot better.... and it includes the same software to run windows apps that Lindows does...

1-Dos with DesqView 386/X, Qemm386 = fastest and most stable multitasking

2-Windows 2000 Professional = most stable and secure of NT flavors yet

3-Windows XP Professional = it's a good extension of 2000 for the most part, sercurity issues abound with new ones popping up each and everyday. The intergration of the web so deeply embedded into the OS is worry some on many account. Personally Microsoft has no right to know what I run on, where I go on the Web and Whom I happen to communicate with. It is an OS, not a Chain and Ball of servitude. I should not have to sec my system against Microsoft compiling personal information on me or anyone who has an account on my system, to sell to thrid parties.

Today in fact there was an email in my personal email box which stated it was from HyperIneractive and that they had been given my name, mailing address and email address by Microsoft for some study. I think it might be from my MSDN account that it came about from, haven't checked into it yet. That doesn't really matter, they shouldn't be allowed to do so without first asking me for permission.

anyway...

other than that, XP is good.
of course this is just my pov such as it is

You know, IPlura - I still have my old copy of DesQView/X somewhere. I loved it, still do really. If you don't need R6 compatability, it works great as a little X workstation, too.

kthxbye, I never could understand how everything went Microsofts direction instead of DesQViews really. Other than IMB bought into them and others backing them.

good solid platform for sure.

Oh by the way, how close are you to West-VA? There is a site located there and my wife is needing someone who can work on site when needed and work from home probably 80% of the time. DSL is provided, hardware firewall or NAT gateway/router and possibly a new company Laptop so you can keep your paper work and applications with you at home or on site.

If your interested I can get more information on the exact location in W-VA and also what they want in qualification, what they will accept and also possible salery.

For those of you not upto snuff on a bit of history... Win XP inherits "some" of its ideas and design from OS/2 ... very short very quick notes... IBM and MS worked on OS/2 up until MS insisted upon coding the GUI into the main OS kernel IBM saw the flaw that would crash the whole system if an app had such access to the heart of an OS... they went their separate ways... NT 3.1 is OS/2 3.0 with a different name. even NT 4.0 is compatible with OS/2 progys just by copying back a single .dll that MS removed (pinball.dll) this is what windows 2000 was based on the NT kernel and XP based upon 2000... while there have been significant changes since then you can not deny MS history... but MS will
I do however currently use XP the most.

§tatic - I can't speak for XP, though I don't see why it wouldn't, but Windows 2000 will also run OS/2 console mode apps - don't forget that. ^_^

It has an OS/2 compatability layer just as it has a Win16 and DOS layer.

IPlural - I agree completely! Well, mostly! ^_^

Hrm, how far am I from WVa? Well, I'm not exactly /close/ I guess - it would really depend on where it's at. I just moved up to Columbia - so basically, I'm right between DC and Baltimore.

Too bad for Big Blue... they should have agreed to some long term royalty on anything that came out of this original arrangement... you know MS says that in called the first winNT 3.1 because of its current windows 3.xx series but at the time they were at 3.11 for work groups... hmmmm fishy... not. You can not deny the marketing genious that is MS.

The only reason I don't use XP is for all the things IPlural said. I don't want someone sticking their beak in my computer so they can sell me something else. As for Linux forget Lindows and Xandros that's for dopes that don't know you can get Linux for free. Anyways Lindows is just a GUI over Debian/Linux. ALL the programs you have to pay Lindows for you can get from Debian for free. You pay $110 for lindows but if you have DSL you can download Debian for free or buy Debian CDs that comes with like 2000 programs for $20

Most stable and trust worthy - Windows 2000. I have used every OS and Windows 2000 is the best. Windows XP isn't too far behind but in the past 2 months that I have been using XP, it has been unstable a few times and it also seems to use a little more memory. Windows XP has a nicer appeal to it but not as stable. So my vote goes to Windows 2000.

I don't have too many stability problems with XP, but it does use more memory than 2000 that is true... but I like the possibilities with Xp... the skinning possibilites mostly... it is morally wrong to run object desktop on anything other than Xp... although if they made it for mac I would most certainly have a mac.... someone should talk to stardock about that... having object desktop for Mac... -- ruderthanme... I thought xandros, and lindows have a lot more advanced install options and such...??? no... is it really identical.??? I would like to check that out...

Amiga OS rulez! It can multitask on 512K of RAM and can display 4096 colors AT THE SAME TIME!
da_zman20 It matters what you mean by install. If you mean installing the OS yeah Lindows is easier two or three screens and your playing with your new OS. If you mean installing programs no not really. Download and install is the same. Only difference there is Lindows automatically installs once the download is done. The only real reason to get Lindows is if your a total novice and don't know better then to pay a yearly membership to a company that sells open-source products.

Never tried Amiga, but back in 199- a friend of mine had an Amiga and he swore by it being best hands down on graphics.

I've wanted an SGI and the price on them has really come down, have to do a web search on Amiga and see whats up with them, they are still manufactured?

IPlural: http://www.amiga.com/

In fact AmigaOS 4.0 is due out soon: http://os.amiga.com/

The current line of Amigas uses the G3 and G4 processor - but they're available almost exclusively in Europe.

Enh - I like BSD, I like Linux, I love XP. I've got a BSD and Linux box, and I've got SuSE 8.0 installed on my notebook alongside Windows XP - but 99 times out of 100 I boot up into Windows.

It does what I want it to do. It does it easily and for the most part stabily. I'm happy with it.
