why?

I personally don't know why they went to court for it. I missed that part. I didn't read the first thing that was posted about it. Sorry. I can't think of why it would be a bad thing. But the Court said to take it out.

If you run any Java applets, or actual Java -applications- chances are you've installed Sun's Java SDK (or at least JRE,) on your system anyway.

Because, you know, you want them to actually run. ^.^

I installed the SP1 two seperate occasions and both times it caused me many problems.
I am running a clean install of XP currently without SP1 and I will not be using it again!

I've not had any problems installing SP1 on either Home or Pro - but really, as long as you download the security patches that you need, there's not much need for it anyway.

Making MS remove their version of the Java VM is a good thing. Microsoft took Java and bastardized it to suit their needs, which appears to have been illeagal. SO, Sun took them to court and won. Now MS has to allow users, (us) to be able to use either version of the VM on our machine. It allows OEMs to include either version.

All this further breaks down MS's attempts to monopolize our desktops.

I don't want to get off on a rant here, I am certainly not MS bashing, (I can, but I won't), but MS needs to allow their OSes to be more open. The upper management there doesn't seem to be willing or wanting to do so, so the courts have had to step in and make sure it is done.

Personally, I have used both and I can't tell the difference really. But just having the choice is what I value most of all. In other words, I'll eat a bowl of sh!t, just so long as I have a choice. Isn't that what democracy is all about?

thanks Phreak... I've never noticed any difference either.

Jam: I installed XP with SP1 and haven't had any problems...perhaps it was one of the other patches?

Your welcome.

I "accidentally" uninstalled MSJVM from my 2k box a while back, and the only way I could get it back was by installing Sun's JRE.

I installed MS JVM on my XP box shortly after I set it up, as one of my favorite sites uses Java. When I installed SP1 I had no problems.

All MS has to do is put an updated version of Java into sp1... I don't personally like Sun's JRE I use it for netscape but it loads too slowly ... if you search you can find MS Virtual Machine on some support pages. Just not from MS directly.

Loads too slowly? Gads - well, I can't say - I don't use netscape. In MSIE it pops up just as quickly as Microsoft's own VM does though.

Well, I don't know.. maybe it is just my computer but SP1 caused me nothing but strange problems so I got rid of it.
I keep all of the other individual patches installed as they come up though and my computer is running just fine like this.
I've read a lot of articles about other people having problems with it also, so I know I'm not alone in this.
