Music Review: ILoveMakonnen & Drake "Tuesday"

ILoveMakonnen & Drake

Tuesday

Album: ILoveMakonnen
Year: 2014

Drake only has Tuesday to relax in the mellow “Tuesday.”

Worshipping synths open the single, setting a religious tone. The chorus opens the single, IloveMakonnen notices that there are far more people than he expected. A girl started talking to him, asking him what he does and the type of car he drives. He isn’t sure where her boyfriend went. However, he can already tell she has certain standards. (“Got the club going up on a Tuesday/Got yo girl in the cut and she choosy/Got the club going up on a Tuesday/Got yo girl in the cut and she choosy/ Got the club going up on a Tuesday/Got yo girl in the cut and she choosy.”)

Yesterday was a profitable day. People buying their drugs to have for the rest of the week. He stays up all night, outside the clubs to see if anyone wants something. He also has been traveling to Nevada where some of his customers are. It’s what he has to do. He checked in with his parole officer and she doesn’t suspect anything. (“Working Monday night, on the corner flipping hard/Made at least three thousand, on the Boulevard/I've been working graveyard, shifts every other weekend/Ain't got no ********** time to party on the weekend/I've been flipping in the house, making juugs on the highway/I've been riding out of state, making money like my way/I don't think that I should dance, I'm just gon have another drink/I'm doing my stance, you know my Molly pink/I've got the loudest of the loud, you know my gas stink/My P.O. think I'm in the house, don't give a damn about what she think.”)

                 The chorus is sung again.

               IloveMakonnen repeats the first verse.

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

There is not much difference between Drake’s version and the original. IloveMakonnen’s has one extra verse, which is detailed about the types of drugs he sells. Otherwise, it’s mostly the same. The delivery is what seperates them. IloveMakonnen has a just-woke-up, groggy delivery while Drake is out and about, ready to jump on some tables.

There are some pro and cons for each version: IloveMakonnen’s original first verse adds some characterization to the song. Editing it out in Drake’s version and repeating the first verse makes his somewhat repetitive. But it does give ILoveMakonnen his due.

The lax “Tuesday” finds Drake edging out IloveMakonnen by a hair.
