Music Review: Britney Spears & Iggy Azalea "Pretty Girls"

Britney Spears & Iggy Azalea

Pretty Girls

Album: TBA

Year: 2015

Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea both enjoy the privilege of having good looks in the vain “Pretty Girls.”

Lethargic drums open the single, setting a sleepy tone. In the chorus, the line to the club is wrapped around the block. There is no need to think of a plan. Spears and Iggy flash their smiles and show some cleavage. It gets them inside. The rules do not apply to them. (“All around the world, pretty girls/Wipe the floor with all the boys/Pour the drinks, bring the noise (It's Iggy-Iggs!)/We're just so pretty!/All around the world, pretty girls/Jump the line, to the front/Do what we like, get what we want (Where you at, Brit?)/We're just so pretty!”)

Spears says that no matter where they are, whether traveling or out to the grocery store, they get hit on. The guys don’t know what to expect. Once they figure out what type of guy he is, they like to mess with him a little. Not one of them is unique. (“Hey, don't you know that it's always the same?/From Australia 'round to LA/You can betcha',wherever the girls go, boys follow/We be keeping them up on their toes/They can laugh, but they don't get the jokes/Just you watch, they're so predictable (Some things don't change..”)

In the pre-chorus, guys can’t believe they are in such prescence of beauty. They salivate and start rambling. Spears and Azalea have already begun to place bets. (“ (The girls roll up)/Windows roll down (Eyes on us)/Jaws on the ground (Watch them go)

It's just so funny (Like bees to the honey.”)

                    The chorus is sung again.

Spears wishes guys would act normal around her. They only see her as a conquest. (“Tell me, is it true that these men are from Mars?/Is that why they be acting bizarre?/Every time I walk out of my house it's like, "Hey, baby!"/They don't see me rolling my eyes/They buzzing around me like flies/They got one thing on their minds (Some things don't change.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, Azalea has broken a lot of hearts. She has too much to lose by being attached and with one guy. It has to be the right guy, who is just as attractive as she is. She’s got a great body, which gives her plenty of choices. (“Damn, still killing them softly/I would spend time with you but that'd cost me/They pray that Iggy-Iggy give 'em one more chance/But busy Iggy wouldn't even give 'em one more glance/See, it's a thin line between the beauty and the beast/Slim waist, thick cake, the whole world want a piece/Bad girl, good (ooh) would make you lose your mind/All of the boys begging Britney, hit 'em one more time/Iggs.”)

The chorus is sung once more to end the single.

Spears postures and talks her way through.  She waves her hand away, too good for any rhythm or maintaining any sense of structure. Thankfully, without the fake British accent. Nonetheless, Spears loses in the power play. Azalea is the new hot thing that she needs to look cool again.

Azalea seems to have the single tailor made for her. It suits her speed. The “Iggy Iggs” in every intro of the songs she appears, has gotten old. Even towards the end, the arrangement references “Fancy” with the grunts in the background. Unfortunately, Charli XCX isn’t there to save it.

The disappointing  “Pretty Girls” confirms the downslide of Spears’ career.
