Music Review: Jomanda "Got A Love For You"

Got A Love For You
Album: Someone To Love Me
Year: 1991
Joanne Thomas knows she has found a good boyfriend in the fledgling “Got A Love For You.”
Stylish synths open the single, setting a cosmopolitan tone. Usually, she doesn’t look for potential dates in the club. Her friends told her it would be ok. They’ve met some great people there. She was nervous, trying to flirt but feeling awkward about it. Then, she saw her now-boyfriend. She couldn’t speak. They began to talk away from the music. She’s lucky to have him to him in her life. She isn’t sure of what she’s doing. It’s her first real long-term relationship. She realizes she has to grow up and become a much more mature person. (“First day went out, my heart stood still/I never had a man like you and a doubt I ever will/Some I`m trying to play in all these love games/Once you came into my life I had a change.”)
In the chorus, she says she has to begun to plan for her future. It’s not just her anymore. Unlike her past boyfriends, she won’t cheat. He’s going to fall in love with her and want to be with her for a long time. (“That`s why I`m so glad I found you/Gonna build my whole world around you/Oh yea, I wanna be true I wanna be with you/Got a love for you/‘Cause you`re special/Got a love for you/Listen to me babe/Got a love for you/How you feelin`/Got a love for you/I wanna be true.”)
She promises to comfort him when he’s down. It will fill the void in his heart. She really cares for him. It’s as these complex emotions she can’t figure out. She won’t ever break up with him over some petty reason. She’ll exist solely for him. (“When you're lonely, I'll be there for you/I'll hug and kiss you all, and make you so much better/No other girl can make you feel the same/And I`m the way on you, I got a thing for you/I can`t explain/I`ll never ever leave you/You know I`m here to please you/Oh boy, wanna be true wanna be true.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she says in their past relationships, they both were really immature. She always had to have her way. He spent too much time with his friends. However, together they learned from their mistakes and are right for each other. (“I remember the games that we used to play/And all the hearts we used to break/No one makes me feel the way you do/That`s why, baby, I`m gonna be true.”)
In the final section, a variation of the chorus is sung. (“Got a love for you/Got a love for you/Got a love for you/Got a love for you/Baby baby/Got a love for you/Got a love for you/Got a love got a love for you/Got a love for you/Oh, I got a love for you/Got a love for you, baby.”)
Thomas has heft to her vocals but somehow, it seems to be too much for the song. She seems to be aggressive whereas the synths are formal and posh. The synths have a late night elegance to it that deserve to be sampled in another song someday.
The middling “Got A Love For You” has plenty of good elements but just not together.
