Yea, I lost connection to the site about 3:30a EST..

XP is more stable then ME I'll tell you that. I had so much problems with ME, it didn't like my Hardware. XP did a excellent job with it. Just several companies didn't have the upgraded drivers I needed but the 2k drivers work as well.. If you didn't know.. XP is like 2K more than 98 or ME.. The shell structure just to let you know.

Learned a few things about XP. This is the 3rd puter with XP. XP will stop if your ram chips are messed up. ME will not, so ME will load bogus data because it ignores messed up ram. Never had 98. Went from 95 to me.

PS. Anyone know how to format a hard drive in XP? I have a couple HD's I'd like to format and reuse. Need detailed instructions. It was easy in ME.

Using Windows Explorer right click on the drive and choose Format, nothing too detailed about it... it's all point & grunt

I like using the utilities disk from Maxtor. It's the best program that I've found so far

depending on the drive, you have to use the Ontrack Drive Manager that comes with it or you can download from the website. Maxtor, Segate, etc...

The thing about the Drive Manager that comes with the drives is that if you have a ATA100 and use the Drive Manager to set it up. You do not have any problems with getting the fastest transfer rates out of the drive and across the bus. If you use the driave management in WIndows (you name it) you do not always get the peak performance.

ATA66 ATA100 and ATA133 should pretty much be setup with the drives software that comes with it.

The bus driver can make some difference also, such as the VIA 1in4 drivers. My ASUS motherboard allows me to install 8 ATA100 drives on the motherboard and then use expansion cards for more if I needed them. RAID is something to consider if your motherboard is ready for it out of the box, it also makes a difference.

anyway... just an FYI...

Here is the link to TechRepublics website, from there you can find some good links to performance sites and such.

Also stay ontop of industry dirt and tweaks for just about all Microsoft applications and OS-es and many others.

WOM: PS. Anyone know how to format a hard drive in XP?

If you have problems formatting a NTFS drive (XP won't let you format those) open a DOS window and type 'format X:', where 'X' is the drive letter you want, and it will allow you to dismount the drive first.

Fuzzy, I didn't know that.. Umm, How in heck did I format thos NTFS drives and partitions.. Puzzling now.

/me heads hurts from too much thinking

Depends if you have data on them I suppose. Usually you can't format a drive with a recycler on cause XP is using it.
