Bug reports (Mac OS X / MacBook Air)

Hello!

While this is my favorite RTS and perhaps even favorite overall game right now, I have encountered quite a few issues so far. Well, it's understandable. In any case, here they are:

1) After finishing a SP/MP game, the game menu disappears for good until I restart the game. Apparently it still "exists" (?) since a new game seems to start when I just randomly click at the screen, but it's not visible at all. This is quite a bit annoying.

2) There's quite an unusual amount of delay especially in multiplayer games and even more so when I'm hosting a game or there are a lot of players. It often takes like 1-2 seconds before a command goes through, at worst even 3-4 seconds. In the worst cases it's, frankly, unplayable. The situation is much more bearable in single player games, but it's otherwise more fun to play multiplayer. In addition to lag, when hosting a multiplayer game (I only tried once though) some weird error popped up at the top of the screen. I think it was something like "Null - Reference can't be found"? Along those lines. It appeared like 5 times at the beginning and then disappeared for the rest of the game.

3) The UI generally seems a bit... Unresponsive? Even without the lag, in a single player 1v1 on a small map, it feels like there's some "delay" after commands. Well, the market actions (buy/sell) feel generally smooth, but for example opening a new UI element (Hacker Array / Offworld Market / etc.). feels like it takes way too much time and makes me less likely to use those features. Ideally it would be a near instant act to open a Hacker Array. This might have something to do with my slightly slow computer, though, although I play on low settings and meet the minimum requirements... But I have 100 FPS on though.

4) It'd be nice if it wouldn't take so long to show information after hovering over something. It takes like 20 seconds to see what type of colonies the others have founded by hovering over their names, and you can't really spare that much time before finding a good spot and starting initial production. But then again, in some cases it would be better to check what other colonies have been founded before deciding your initial claims. This is less of a problem with 2-4 players (since you can more easily see in the notifications who found what and even keep up with their founding locations). But with 8 players, the notifications get flooded with semi-useless information (first steel mill etc.) compared to founding announcements and it takes too long to view them by hovering over their names. So I'd like the ability to quickly identify a player's colony type without hovering over their name (preferably both on the map and next to their name) as well as maybe reducing the amount of information shared in the notifications..

There's definitely great potential in this game. If these problems were resolved, it would go a long way towards making the game even more enjoyable :)

Oh yeah... The "slow hover over problem" applies to hovering over gathering/production facilities as well. It'd be nice to quickly see the name and production of a tile when needed.

Hi,

Thank you for submitting this information. I have been looking into the first issue lately as I've seen reports from others and reproduced it myself. The issue is in a third-party library we are using so I have been reaching out to the creators to get this resolved for our Mac users.

I have been doing small changes to try to improve Mac performance, but I will do some more tests on those fronts. If you could share your machine specs, I can try to use those as a comparison to what I've been testing on.

For the fourth issue, as a temporary solution it may be worth noting that the footprints/shapes of the colony types are different and are shown next to the player name, as well as are the shapes of the physical colony. It may take some time to remember them, but that is often a quick way to tell the colony type in game.

As always feedback and bug reporting is much appreciated!

Another bug for you - on my Macbook Pro (2014) with Yosemite, I can't click on any of the options in the setup menu, so a Skirmish game, for instance, I can't change the difficulty, number of AI players or anything else EXCEPT the checkboxes. Apparently the drop-menus aren't responding. This also means I can't change the resolution of the game, which means that at 1440x900, the bottom UI items can't really be seen or clicked easily, since fullscreen doesn't have the menus and so if I go into fullscreen, I can't do anything, at all, except shutdown my Mac and boot it in recovery mode to kill the process.

Love the game, really wish the OS X experience wasn't so buggy.

Thanks for the quick response!

Apparently I hit some sort of a posting limit for new accounts, but here's a reply from a temporary account (Xatalos here).

Here's more specific information about my computer:

13-inch mid-2013 MacBook Air (1440 x 900)

1,7 GHz Intel Core i7

8 Gt 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel HD Graphics 5000 1024 Mt

OS X 10.9.5 (heard about some performance issues so didn't upgrade yet, should probably now though...)

I guess it's pushing the limits of the game's requirements a bit, but yeah, it'd definitely be nice if it was a bit more smooth / responsive anyway. Part of the problem might be the quickly advancing turns and how the UI needs to update for that as well, potentially causing some delay in the user actions? A bigger issue is the lag in the multiplayer experience (my current internet connection isn't very good which certainly doesn't help!). I should probably test the game on a better computer / internet connection at some point to see how it affects things.

Ah yeah, that's true. I should memorize the colony shapes too, that would probably ultimately be the fastest way to recognize a colony type. That doesn't help so much when zoomed out / wanting the list of all colony types though :P

I have yet to encounter the bug that elsewares mentioned. Haven't seen it so far.

I just played a short multiplayer game and the lag/performance wasn't all that bad... It's also not all that slow to hover over a specific player's name, but when you go from one player to another with your mouse, the previous player's info kind of lingers around for a while... Making it a bit too slow to hover over several players in my opinion. I think it'd be best if each player had a specific icon or something next to their name? Instead of the generic icon that's currently given to each player that founded a colony already..

Thanks for the feedback. I'll let the interface team know the UI suggestions.

As for the unresponsive menus, does it occur in both full-screen and windowed? I've encountered the issue when windowed and have tracked it to an anomaly in the engine, which I have sent in a report for. Basically the clicks are being interpreted as two, so it opens the drop-down menu and then instantly closes it.  As I hear back from contacted parties and resolve these items I will update you all.

Thanks for your patience in this.

Thanks for the quick response - I can't play in fullscreen because the game menus don't show up in fullscreen, unless there's been a fix pushed out for that. The only menu that shows up in fullscreen is the main menu, and the window blocks any input to the rest of the OS - I can't CMD-TAB out of it, for example. I literally have to restart and hold SHIFT to avoid having Offworld re-launch on restart.

Can you post your player log? There's a known issue that I'm sure is the cause, but I can verify that it is the issue. I'll be digging into it even more very soon.

I've been having a few problems on my 2014 Macbook Pro. The UI freezes in some games (always seems to be a game I'm doing well in - figures). The game continues behind, but I can't select anything, nor do any game keyboard short cuts work. I have to force quit and restart. Second, upon finishing a game, the screen does not show any UI elements, just the background. I again have to force quit and restart.

Thanks!

I'm having a problem on my Macmini (2010) that when I left-click, it adds a second click. Not so much a problem in the menus, but when i'm buying/selling resource it means i buy/sell double and I can't access the special buildings from the top screen options as it opens then closes them, i have to go to the building on the claim and then click it.

This doesn't appear to happen on the PC i use at work.

Hello,

The double click issue is known, but it is an error in our Engine. I have contacted their team and was assured it would be fixed in an upcoming version of the engine, but I have no word beyond that. It can sometimes be resolved by playing fullscreen if you're playing windowed, or vice versa. I know that is not an optimal fix, but it may help for now, and I assure you this is on the radar. Thank you for your patience.

My main graphics card gave out, and now the interface is extremely slow (ie, takes a second or 2 to update). I'm getting the card fixed, but this laggyness with the UI was there before my graphics card failed as it still took like 100ms to update anyway. Non-ui FPS is 25+ but the UI is really slow.

Haven't tested in Windows version yet, but in multiplayer I can't invite friends. My friends list just doesn't show up. I've exited the game. I've restarted Steam, even rebooted my machine, with no joy. I can start a public game and people can join it, but no joy with invites.

Any thoughts? Anyone else encountering this?
