Music Review: Fifth Harmony & Kid Ink "Worth It"
Fifth Harmony & Kid Ink
Worth It
Album: Reflection
Year: 2015
Camila Cabello wants her crush to prove he can handle her in the slinky “Worth It.”
A sample of Club Noveau’s “Why You Treat Me So Bad” opens the single, setting an inviting tone. In the chorus, she challenges her crush to one-up her and take her by surprise. All the effort is just part of the fun. (“Give it to me I'm worth it/Baby I'm worth it/Uh huh I'm worth it/Gimme gimme I'm worth it/Give it to me I'm worth it/Baby I'm worth it/Uh huh I'm worth it/Gimme gimme I'm worth it.”)
In the bridge, Kid Ink is shocked at first. Then, he gets excited by her game. She may be coy and playing hard to get but he will get her to cave. (“Okay, I tell her bring it back like she left some/Bring it, bring it back like she left some/Uh in the club with the lights off/What you actin shy fo', come and show me that you/Wid it, wid it, wid it, wid it, wid it/Stop playin', how you know that I/Wid it, wid it, wid it, wid it, wid it, wid it/What you actin' shy for?”)
She says she’s only interested in him. He can talk about how great he is in bed and that’ll change her life. But she says what she means. She tells him ok, they’ll go to his place and then heads to the parking lot. (“Just give me you, just give me you/Just gimme me you, that's all I wanna do/And if what they say is true, if its true/I might give me to you/I may take a lot of stuff/Guaranteed I can back it up/I think I'ma call you bluff/Hurry up, I'm waiting out front.”)
In the pre-chorus, she’s attracted to him. She can barely contain herself and tries to show off as much as possible. (“Uh huh, you see me in the spot like oooh I love your style/Uh huh, show me what you got, cus I don't wanna waste my time/Uh huh, you see me in the spot like oooh I love your style/Uh huh, show me what you got now come and make it worth my while.”)
The chorus is sung again.
They are in his bed. She can feel his knees shaking when it brushes against her. She tells him to calm down and she’ll guide him. She says don’t worry about hurting her. (“It's all on you, it's all on you/It's all on you, so what you wanna do?/And if you don't have a clue, not a clue/I'll tell you what to do/Come harder just because/I don't like like it too soft/I like it a little rough, not too much, but maybe just enough.”)
The pre-chorus, chorus and bridge are sung again.
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again to end the single.
Fifth Harmony amp up the sex appeal and are in full control. Confident and comfortable with the material, they don’t even flinch. They balance the fine line of being empowered but not trashy.
Kid Ink can take whatever the group throws at him and then takes it even further. He doesn’t wear out his welcome, limiting himself to the bridge and makes a lasting impression.
The Club Noveau sample, which is common, takes a part of it and turns it into its own. The handclaps and its beat is sped up, giving it an aggressive feel. A saxophone is added in, making it distinctive.
The rousing “Worth It” knows what it wants.
