Music Review: Jason Derulo "Want To Want Me"

Jason Derulo
Want To Want Me
Album: TBA
Year: 2015

Jason Derulo lusts for his new girlfriend in the foolish  “Want To Want Me.”

Michael Hutchence’s “ha” from INXS “Need You Tonight” opens the single, setting a tricky one.   His face flushes as her face enters his dreams. He shakes the last of sheet from under his feet and lets it fall to floor. Every inch of his skin is tingling and it’s as though he’s on fire. He pulls a t-shirt and some shorts from his drawers. He signals for a cab and gives the driver directions, handing him the fare with at least 80% tip. He has to sleep with his girlfriend now. He can’t take it. (“It's too hard to sleep/I got the sheets on the floor, nothing on me/And I can't take it no more, it's a hundred degrees/I got one foot out the door, where are my keys?/Cause I gotta leave/In the back of the cab/I tipped the driver 'head of time, get me there fast/I got your body on my mind, I want it bad/Oh just the thought of you gets me so high/So high.”)

In the chorus, he hopes her feelings are as intense as his. He’s already won over by her. (“Girl you're the one I want to want me/And if you want me, girl you got me/There's nothing I, I wouldn't do, I wouldn't do/Just to get up next to you/Girl you're the one I want to want me/And if you want me, girl you got me/There's nothing I, I wouldn't do, I wouldn't do/Just to get up next to you, just to get up next to you.”)

She opens the door, leaning against the frame. Her naked body brushes against his as she tells him she’s ready. She lets him grab his waist and lead her into back into her house. They fall to the floor.(“You open the door/Wearing nothing but a smile down to the floor/And you whisper in my ear, "Baby I'm yours"/Oh just the thought of you gets me so high/So high.”)

                   The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, when he thinks of her touch on him, it’s enough to drive him crazy. (“Just the thought of you/Gets me so high, so high/Just the thought of you/Gets me so high, so high.”)

A extended chorus ends the single. (“Girl you're the one I want to want me/And if you want me, girl you got me/There's nothing I, I wouldn't do, I wouldn't do/Just to get up next to you/Girl you're the one I want to want me/And if you want me, girl you got me/There's nothing I, I wouldn't do, I wouldn't do/Just to get up next to you/I would do anything,/Just to get up next to you/Anything and everything, just to get up next to you, just to get up next to you.”)

Derulo smooths over his overt sexual desire with a submissive vocal. It’s clear that he’s the one who cares the most. Usually, he doesn’t show this side often anymore. As of late, his singles have been degrading in some way. However, he

The INXS sample is distracting. While the sample by itself is great and iconic, it sticks out in the R&B arrangement. It simply doesn’t fit. To be fair, INXS is like U2: their music is custom made to
them and any singer trying to replicate it some way is going to have to adjust to the sample.

The  mild  “Want To Want Me” lacks heat but he’s got his head straightened out some.
